TJEDI - we jammed the bejeeezus out of West Chester, PA & surrounding areas from 1991 - 2000. Alibis > 15 North Cafe was our home, mostly. Other clubs played: The Barn Door (Wilmington, DE - where it all began!), TJ Rafters (ended up burning to the ground the day after we played a HUGE night! We didn't do it, I swear!), Rex's, Brownie's 23 East (some double-bills w/ Splintered Sunlight, opened for & jammed w/ Vassar Clements & Commander Cody with Stir Fried), The Middle East (Philly - played many great nights there...opened for David Nelson Band twice and NRPS once AND Gov't Mule - got to jam w/ Warren and Allen Woody late night post show...also Middle East's spot during Philly Food Festival - opened for Zen Tricksters...our keyboardist was hired away later that night by Chubby Checker - that twistin' bastid!!!), West Chester's Turk's Head Festival (headliners), The Blue Terrapin, Mr. Charlie's Good Time Tavern, and I'm SURE many, many more....

I'm currently involved in a project called Mason's Children. We play mostly Dead from around '69-'74 with some later-era stuff thrown in. Funny thing is, I just recently found out that there's another Mason's Children in Colorado. I heard them and they're really good! Hope they don't come after us!(A friendly game of laser tag perhaps?) I know there are 3 called Born Cross-Eyed (I was also in one of those) , 2 Jack Straws, 2 Cosmic Charlies, The August West Band, August West & The Wharf Rats.... anyway, the name game is definitely a hard one my friend, and I know you'll find a good one. JAM ON, BROTHER MIKE!

only about a million bands called "Uncle John's Band", quite a few have taken up the "Jerry's Kids" moniker over the years as well.

My latest idea is "Plaid Iguanas" as in the part of Scully's book where Kreutzmann asks "If this is a gig, how do you explain all the plaid iguanas?"

My band's in the same straights, needing to choose a new name. We're currently the Pleasant Mountain Boys (after the neighborhood, Mt Pleasant, where two of us live), but there's an accopela gospel band from Tennessee or somewhere that already has that name. In Denver I played in a band called the Deadbeats. We ended up hearing from another band called the Deadbeats from Chicago and they were all pissed off that we were using their name. Turned out there was another Deadbeats in NY as well. Go figure...

The way I see it is as long as the two bands arent in the same area-no probs.Its all about the music anyway.
Getting pissed off 'cause some band on the other side of the country has the same name is ridiculous.
There was a thread about two bands from the same area that called them selves "1/2 Step" and it seemed not to be too cool.
Here in P.A we have a band called SPLINTERED SUNLIGHT thats plays all over the Tri State area,so I wouldnt think their name would be up for grabs.
Its kinda cool to think there is another band out there with the same name....
The right name for a band should have some special meaning to the band members.
Some Dead cover band names I'm not too thrilled about-

I've been in the Chicago scene for over 15 years and never heard of them. Weird...

Shoot - there were THREE OTHER BANDS named Double Dose when we were on the Philly scene in the 90s. One in particular was a duet of brothers in and around the Colorado area (I think)...they actually contacted us and told us to change our name. We were an unsigned band, so we basically snubbed them. Hahah....whatever....my CURRENT band, theCAUSE had to change the SPELLING to all one word, half in lowercase half in all caps, because if you Google The Cause, you'll find a band of pierced up metal heads...and trust me...that ain't us!! FYI - I see that our bassist has just uploaded kind versions of us playing MASON'S CHILDREN and STELLA BLUE on our website, if y'all wanna check it out!

Mike, how long ago was that?? That's kinda funny in that former Deadbeat Scott Schwartz later moved from Chicago to Denver and did a stint as the de facto "Bobby" in Shakedown St in the 90's, then formed One Kind Favor (presumably as the "Jerry" since he's a smokin lead player). Former Chicago Deadbeat Pat Nevins turned up as the "Bobby" in Grapefruit Ed in the SF area.

Believe it or not I did several shows with a IL band calling itself the Heart Of Gold Band... in the 90's before Donna revived the name but I still thought it kinda poor form to lift so directly, a bit like cal;ling ourselves Diga Rhythm Band or Legion of Mary!. I always referred to it acronymically as "HOG-buh". It was a piss-poor band anyway...
