This past Sat night I got to perform with my band theCAUSE for a very special person in my life, Arthur Stern. Arthur is the main reason I have enjoyed the GD music and the scene for the last 30 years. Back in the early 70's Arthur would send his brother (my next door neighbor) reel to reel tapes of GD soundboards. (for you youngins ask your folks what a reel to reel is!!) So I was listening to those great shows from Winterland and the Fillmore etc.. Arthur told his brother Fred and me to go see the dead in 71 and did see my first show on 4/12/71 with Jerry opening the show with NRPS. If you have a copy of the GD album What a long strange trip..you will see he did the photos for it..so Arthur decides to come to Pgh from California to see his Mom and makes sure his trip is on a weekend we are playing..the first time he has seen me perform in a jamband playing bass (we have jammed mandolin together over the years) ..I felt like a kid with the master coming to watch...and we rocked the first set and got some great feedback after the show from him...all in all it was so very cool...

Very cool, CB! I can sorta relate. My dad came out to my last show and saw me perform for the first time (long story). We planned on me playing some roto-toms with the drummer for "drumz". Well my dad has played drums since the 60s in bands into the 70s. He sat in with us in my place on roto toms.

its nice to see find out how connected everyone on this board is to the core grateful dead family. without ever meeting any of you guys i still feel a lot closer to a real understanding of the grassroots organization that the dead really were. it sure is nice to be appreciated by someone who appreciated what we all appreciate (if you know what i mean). congrats, mr. bass! your band is tight yet loose, and sounds like you all have a great time!

strum, that is fantastic to hear your dad coming out to see you do what you are most passionate about! as close as i am with my dad we still dont see eye to eye about a lot of things. those moments when you get to put those things away and have a blast are too rare yet oh so precious. congrats to you as well, man!

Man oh man... A little too close to home SS...
My dad lives in South MS and the whole family was kicked square in chin by Katrina. Many homes were lost , damaged but all were safe. I pulled him out of the muck to stay with my family for a while to get his head right. We were sitting on the sofa, late, late night. He asked me to pick up the guitar to "Rock his soul" (His words, he's a deadhead as well), I busted into "Black Peter" because it felt right. I did the double extended Phil version... When I let the last "Run and see" fade to the dark, I looked over and he had tears rolling down his cheek. Deep, good stuff....
Something my wife of 20 years is just now understanding... being a deadhead is much more than the appreciation of the music.
Thanks for letting me get that out. It was one of those moments....

My Dad died two years ago in March.

He was never much into music but when he came over here for holidays we always had a BBQ, a few wines and me and a mate played a few songs.

Still don’t think he took the music that seriously but did say what a great evenings he had
