Hey all, don't really know where to begin, got several topics to cover here...
I've always been very much into music, and it is one of my passions in life. I play guitar and appreciate good guitar playing, but it has only been recently that I've really started to get into the Grateful Dead. I had heard a couple songs like 'truckin' and 'casey jones' on the radio before, but not until fairly recently have I felt the true power of the dead through their live recordings, which is what its all about.
The first track that had me knocked back in my chair was when i listened to 'chinacat sunflower' from the europe 72 album, and i was blown away, and to this day remains by far one my top favorite dead recordings. I've also checked out some chinacat's from 74 which were pretty sweet, a little more mellow, but the recording from europe 72 remains my favorite.
I also fell in love with a recording of 'Franklin's Tower' that I had downloaded; i don't even know the date or venue, but based on listening to samples from the Grateful Dead Archive website, it sounds like it was around the may 1977 time-frame. If anyone knows the exact date of the show, i'd appreciate if ya let me know; to give more info. about this recording, its 10m56secs long, and theres a part where at about 5"40' jerry shreds, and at 5"50' bobby is shredding. its a freakin amazing recording, and in my opinion the best version of franklin's tower.
Another song I recently was blown away by was 'Scarlet>Fire' from 5/8/77 Cornell, which is currently my absolute favorite song, and I've listened to quite a bit of music in my day, although im only 23. Absolutely beautiful music, and an overall fantastic show that date. Jerry at his finest, Bobby truly phenomenal on the rhythm, Lesh a beast on the bass, and its also one of the few instances where i dont mind hearing donna's voice. In 'Fire' jerry's guitar has a really funky sound to it; does anyone know what equipment jerry used during this show?? and what effect made his guitar sound like it did during fire?
I have a recording of the whole 5/8/77 show, but does anyone know where i can get the soundboard recordings of 5/7/77 and 5/9/77 ??? instead of the low-quality recordings available on the Grateful Dead Archive website.
Anyway, I don't want this post to turn into a 500 page novel, but I would also like to bring attention to 1 more song, which I believe is a greatly under-appreciated Dead song... 'Sage & Spirit' - the version off of 'One From the Vault'. Absolutely beautiful, and I'm shocked that it does not get more recognition, and I believe I had read that the Dead only played that song in concert twice.
Based on these songs that I've listed, does anybody have any recommendations of recordings they believe I would also appreciate greatly? I've been listenin to the dead quite a bit lately, but compared to people who have known them for 30 years, I am quite a newbie to all of this. But it is great to find a forum like this; not many people my age where i live (north jersey) really listen to the dead or appreciate the music they made. Any responses, or recommendations of songs/dates would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...
