Okay, I know this has been posted before... probably numerous times... But, a search here on "Jerry Garcia tone settings" and other variations turn up the obvious hundreds of threads. So...

I remember seeing sugestions for dialing in the low, mid and highs on the amp, but can't find it after an hour of going through old threads. Can anyone point me to it or simply re-post? I remember it having a bigger cut somewhere than would occur to me, but just can't remember what they were...

Jerry boosted his mids . On a Twin silver face(Non master volume) here are my settings:
treble: 2
mid: 9
bass: 1
Reverb: 12:00

These are on a Twin i had modded from Joe Martin. It really gets the tone. I dont know if its the settings, or the re-work done in the point to point!

On my Twin I peg the treble at 9 or 10 or so. I've been told that the circuit for the mids on a twin is not really a boost but a cut - so that putting the mids on 8 or 9 (like I do too) is actually dipping the mids a bit. I put my bass on about 2 or 3 or so.

My twin is also a Joe Martin mod and you'll find that he also recommends setting it like this. However, he says to turn on the bright switch - I find this to be too piercing and brittle.

When did you have Joe do your amp?

Joe did my amp about a year and a half ago. He also came up for a weekend in sept and we re-biased it and gave it a good tune up. It sound amazing.

i got my amp from joe too and i dont exactly know what he changed on it but whatever he did it works cause its sounding pretty cool

pretty much ditto for my 68 Showman. Rolling off highs is what the tone knob is for on the guitar.

As I understand passive circuitry, and I could be wrong:
10 = fully open / no cut

So if treble and mid and bass are on 10 it's fairly wide open.

But you are cutting from 10 to 1 and from 1 to 10 you are opening back up.

Mike's words made it sounds like as you go from 1 - 10 you are cutting more - I see it as cutting less. Or said differently as you increase the dial you let more into the circuit.

Amps are weird that they have series of gain stages to be cut up along the way...

That's really funny... 'cause at rehearsal today I set it up that way and our other guitarist broke into Tweezer as soon as he heard me warming up!

I don't know about the cut/boost thing... as I've said before, I'm an idiot not-so-savant at electronics... but I did come up with decent settings by dropping the lows quite a bit. Granted, it's on a Tube Driver amp (hey, if Jer could go to a Trio, I can go mini, right?), but it definitely sounded better than the shred-metal mid scoop I'd been using.

Also, I tweaked the active EQ on the Musician accordingly for Jer and Bob riffs - tons of treble and out of phase pups for Bob licks, clean mids and highs for Jerry parts - and it came out on target.

Anybody else have this situation where you have to bounce between the two "styles", even sometimes in the course of the same song? Our singer/other guit is pretty much a play the chords kinda guy (though he really stretched Scarlet out today)... just wonderin'...

Oh, and I finally got that distortion/octave sound I've been after for a looooong time! God bless you all real good!
