I have not used IRC in years. Internet Relay Chat is one of the most promiscuous and abused protocols out there. Virus infections are easily spread over IRC connections. Especially in an open forum.

As I said, I have not played with IRC in years cause last time I did, my computer got infected *real* bad. So, I'm not saying that it is a bad idea, but is there a way to enforce membership, etc.? Maybe to those who say register via the board?

Having had two major virus disk crash and wipeouts, i.e. lost everything on all main discs and having worked for weeks dis-infecting virus ridden systems (aka kids on Internet using AOL group chat... which uses IRC protocol), I am not overly anxious to go down those roads again.

So, what about security, etc.?

(I am in the industry for 20 or so years now)

Regards,

Dave

I'd love to hop aboard but I don't have much to offer myself.

Fretful is right! And I do agree.

Question - what speeds do files transfer?
What if the connection is dropped mid-way?

I hate to be a nay sayer but is this better than BT?

Wouldn't we all be better off BTing off etree.

maybe, but we could still have a rukind chat...

hmmm.. maybe we could even get an irc chatbox imbeddedd in the website *hint hint*

We're not only going to want a channel we'll need a whole server probably. Until then, I'm chillin in #rukind at quakenet

Fretful just sounds like you had a bad run. I used to use mIRC for skate videos and then more recently for music and Ive never had any problems with it. As for SS if you do not complete the download it would go into a folder for incomplete dl's. Once the person that you were gettin it from comes back online it would resume. The speeds depends on the conenction the seeder has and the connection you have. It really is a good idea. Like he said then we can have live chat and sit around and bs if your bored. Also for explaining some things about gear or w/e it can make it alot easier than waiting around for a response. Im all for it and Dalnet would be the way to go. So with that said #Rukind on Dalnet? Who would be the moderators? Ill be one seeing as I know all the commands already.

yeah Dalnets good, im in there right now

yeah speeds can be comparable to BT, but usually faster.. (like blob said, depends on the two ppl sharing files speeds)

and as far as security issues and such we can either A: get our own server, B: password the channel or C: only trade with ppl you know through rukind (assuming we can all trust eachother ;)

also, i find plenty of virus's through BT that norton catches for me, so really keeping up-to-date virus/spyware software, and trading with ppl you know would keep issues to a minimum, if not non-existent.

this way we can have a forum for livechat, shootin the shit, we can share shows and tapes, and we can share backing tracks and things of the like.

as far as operators go, I offer my services, although i understand if it goes to members more senior to these forums than I am.

im currently in #rukind on dalnet hangin out with drumspace (altho he's not there right now)

For my part, I agree it is a cool way to exchange files directly. I was just worried about security on my own systems. It was years ago, maybe 10, probably more cause I think it was the great crash of '97. I think bots got me back then. The mIRC library would open and just hang open and I couldn't get rid of it and was attacked As for the AOL chat rooms which use IRC protocol, well its AOL and we all know what that stands for (from the old days...) so I can't pin the viruses, etc that we got through my kids using AOL on IRC itself, just the abuse of a not well secured protocol.

If there is a password, that is a farily easy thing. It could be changed periodically and the change posted in a topic here on the board and folks, of course, use their forum handles for the nicknames.

The coolest thing was alluded to earlier in the thread, run an IRC server on the RUKIND forum server and provide a web enabled IRC chat client, through the board. Then folks could hang out, live chat and post to discussions, do DCC transfers and read tabs and...and...and all at the same time :-).

Anyway, to all those using it, just be aware of who is on the channel. Once you are in DCC mode, I think you are pretty secure from attacks, etc.

And have fun trading!!!!!

Dave

Another option could be a BT tracker for rukinders.

I'm not sure this site gets enough traffic that would make the effort worthwhile for chat. Plus the intent of this site is to share information. Wouldn't it all be lost in a chatroom?

Sorry to be negative. Just thinking out loud.
