just wondering if anyone has heard dead songs or songs the dead covered on a movie they watched?

i started this becuase i was watching a movie lastnight that had two songs in it:

movie: The Wendell Baker Story
song / songs: Scarlet Begonias (from Mars Hotel version) and Promised Land.

The most standout one I can think of is the American Beauty "Ripple" as soundtrack to a pivotal scene in Mask, one of Cher's Oscar-winning roles. <edit> my bad, she won the Cannes award for Mask and the Oscar for Moonstruck</e>

Then of course there's the live Viola Lee in Petulia from 1968.

Bill Kreutzmann was in the music department for Apocolypse Now (1979), "Ripple" apparently also appeared in "The Runaway Bride" (1999) with Julia Roberts, "The Dreamers" (2003) featured "Dark Star", "Around The Fire" (1999) with Tara Reid(!) featured "Brown Eyed Women", "Rude Awakening" with Eric Roberts & Cheech Marin featured "Uncle John's Band" and finally, "More American Graffiti" (can't believe they actually MADE this film) featured "Cream Puff War". I can't take credit for the knowledge...I went to IMDB and put "Grateful Dead" in their search box!

Oh man - that scene is so sad. It's playing on the radio when she walks in and finds her son dead in his bed - real tear jerker - especially with Ripple filling the air...

i think its called Endless Summer about a bunch of people in there 40's who go back to an old summer camp. One of the guys is a dead head and he is listening to the dead while pigpen sings. The Now sountrack was really more Mickey's gig and Billy and Phil both contributed. The Beam and the Beast were both created in the process of making the film.

I saw a Mitchel Bros.porn movie (before video & DVD) back in the 70s and a nice long version of "the Other One" was the soundtrack.

There was a tv commercial for Cher perfume (good god ya'll... 'can only imagine what that smelled like... yikes?!) and the music was Eep Hour, about 30 seconds leading up to where it builds to a crescendo, just before where the Pedal Steel comes in.
'Can't remember exactly, but I would place this ad in the same timeframe as Mask, 80's?

There's an interesting scene in that movie where they sit down and discuss the lyrics to BEW. I'm paraphrasing here, but here's what I remember one of the characters saying (saw the movie years ago):

Its talking about the roaring 20's and the Depression of the 30's. Its a metaphor for the High of taking drugs and the down that follows it.

Other than that part...it's a pretty horrible movie.
