Shag-
You must not be a junkie like the rest of us
Its is a shame. Now with this Sirus radio and Ipods and whatnot, theres no excuse NOT to listen to the Dead around the clock.
But,seriously folks, if they made an GD guitar instructional tape that you listened to while you slept,I'm sure I'd buy it.
Its an obsession.
Goodnighty night

Well I went for Donkey's years listening every day without fail. Years and years...

It's impossible to lose the love for it.

I've gone 3-4 months at a time and then make up for it .....sometimes I think a break is good for you.... :-)

ever since i discovered the archive about 2 years ago i have been listening almost every day. theres just so much available i can't help but look for new gems from every era!

sometimes i have to switch it up and throw on some beatles, dylan, talking heads, jeff buckley, what have you.

i feel like im ready for a little break. i'm gonna hit up my friend for his coltrane & miles davis discographies and have some fun with that.

so maybe my longest break has been 2-3 days in the last 2.5 years.

I used to think breaks would never be needed, but I took one, and it's helped out a lot, but now I'm just in a different mode of listening. Before I took a break for a while, all I listened to was the dead, I mean, literally, thats it. I listened and knew so much. Friends would throw on shows/random jams, and have me guess what show it was, stuff like that, it was like a game they were playing, to try and stump me (which they rarely if ever did, save a '77 playin' jam they threw on midway through). I was overly obsessed, I had narrowed my musical horizons. I feel much better now having a better mix, and I feel I appreciate music as a whole more. I'm back to listening to more jazz, which can not only be incredibly complex music, but at its core, is the root to a lot of other music (most of the stuff I enjoy), plus I've dug deeper into other bands I would have otherwise passed over, like the talking heads, neil young, etc. I'm glad I took a break.

My dad left the Dead for upwards of about 10 years or so. From around 81 to 95. He was just done with the people etc. Interestingly enough got back into them after Jer died. You can leave them for as long as you want but you never lose it like Shaggy said. He was into Jazz and all them pups. Hes been back full force since then

Jer thought it was unhealthy, how some people are so attached to the dead.

I stopped for about 10 years, from about 1986 to the bitter end. I just wasn't into it and thought it had gone downhill. Also, the bigger crowds kind of freaked me out. Maybe too many completely wasted people and not in the good way. Oh well, my loss and my regret. People tried to change my mind, but I was not a good listener. This is why I'm really glad that Phil and RatDog and all them are still out there. I have a blast at their shows and really am enjoying the whole scene a lot, maybe even more than back in the day, though back in the day is getting really hard to remember.

I've also been listening a long time but I am sure I've had months up to a year without listening. I didn't have much new to listen to and was listening to a bit of alternative rock for a while. I did play dead music through those periods.
