that being said, his act has improved a ton over the years and is more and more professional each time I catch it, most recently gratefulfest and gathering of the vibes.

for those who have noticed his improvement, check out his versions of Senor, of late, he really revives a great song..
he's not Jerry, of course, but it's like you guys who blast DSO ...
in all probability YOU couldn't do it yourself.. the act, the tour, the finances, etc. and you gotta pick on folks who NOT only DO it, but do it for the enjoyment of others..

i listened to honeydew and the 3rd cut (forget the name) i personally dont like the whole loop thing as a performance tool and dont think he did it well on that particular cut...BUT i thought the 3rd track was very good. his voice is clear and strong and his guitar playing is fine.

i only listened to parts of these tracks so i dont profess to be a judge of the guys talent or anything but he seemed fine when he was just playing and singing and not relying on the loop pedal.

i feel keller is not very talented at all...his rhythm is junk, his lyrics suck his singings corney and he just tries to pull off this lack of seriousness like hes just goofin..but its just a cover for lack of great talent...keller should be doing open mics

when i hear even 5 seconds of keller's acoustic guitar, i know it's keller. he has such a distinct sound, and that's something very hard to do with just one instruments nowadays. most people just end up sounding like someone else.

i personally love his singing, his lyrics are just for a fun time (it's not meant to be something like wharf rat), and i think he does an amazing job at rhythm, while he's trying to do leads at the same time.... all with one instrument (excluding loops).

maybe i'm biased since i've had one too much good times at keller's shows, but i don't see how people can think he has no talent.

David Gans has done so much for the Grateful Dead community. IMO, he deserves to play the music of Jerry & Bob. He's earned it.

Oooh, oooh, my turn. I've seen David Gans live a few times, always acoustic, both solo and with an assortment of others. IMHO, his playing is very clean, very articulate, and very precise. His voice is clear and strong, and he can carry a tune better than most. What I personally don't hear in his music is much soul.

That being said, the nature of the type of music he does generally doesn't call for that- it's usually more about a direct, honest presentation of the song.

Long story short, not my specific cup of tea, but neither was John Denver, or James Taylor, those kind of folks. I have a limited attention span for it. But to say that he is a talentless hack is quite a reach.

One of the all time great Dead related interview lines, it's in Conversations With The Dead by Gans. He's interviewing Hunter, and asked him what it's like to be him. Hunter turns the table and asks Gans what it's like to live behind his nose ( if you've never seen David, let's just say if humans were reindeer, he'd be Rudolph ).

Keller also loves the dead so what do you mean by that? Hell, Keller wrote a song about gate crashers at Deer Creek. And for the record I happen to like his singing and guitar playing. Look up a Help>Slip by him and tell me he isnt talented.

As for Gans he definitely has alot of talent and does his best. Not exactly what Id like to hear in a dead cover band but he is still a good musician.

exactly how I feel, the best parts of his shows are the covers, every song he writes sounds like something that belongs on comedy central

My first comment may have been a little harsh, the looping really put me off. I mean I have a looper pedal and you can change it up more than that. And particularly the riffs he played got real repetitive. But I know he was great for the whole scene and I would never bash any musician for doing what they love.

I was really just saying that I dont enjoy his music. No rhyme or reason really, just not my thing I suppose. But since the Keller controversy has come up Ill have to check some of it out.
