Can anyone imagine if their places were reversed, and Bob was gone and Jerry the survivor? I just can't really picture Jerry singing Bob's old tunes.

Interestingly, they did "share" some Dylan songs in their side-bands.

They did indeed share some dylan song, but overall, i enjoy bobby's singing more. He does it with such vim and vigor. That is not to say jerry is emotionless; he is filled with emotion, but its subtle. But when it comes down to it singing wasn't either's strong suit.
On another note, this horseshit shaggy wrote about jerry being the most intelligent person and gifted musician in the band is nonsense. Whoever that person was never met phil. And lastly, this whole jerry=glue thing, or jerry IS the grateful dead is fucking rude and shortsighted. Aside from Bob, Phil, Micky, and Billy, there were seven other members that played in that band over the years. In addition, what about the ram-rod, bear, candelario, parish, and all the others WHO WERE the grateful dead. It is bigger than the stage, and its bigger than jerry open your ears

Whoa there, fellas, simmer down, please. I just finished reading Phil's book last night and at the end he is describing what happened to their whole scene after Jerry passed. People were in disagreement over how to move on and what to do with their vault (the legacy) and stuff like that. How to support GDP and the staff that had relied on the boys to keep touring for their livelihood?

I wish I had the book now but there is a direct quote from Phil that states that Jerry was the glue that held them together, he was never the leader but he set the precedent. Without him, they did not know where to go or how to go about doing it. He was a vital part of the group mind (Phil refers to group mind often throughout the book) and without Jerry things began to fall apart. What would the band be without Jerry? Certainly not the Grateful Dead

That being said, I can see why people are criticizing Bobby for not playing his own songs. They are great and he should keep bringing them to people. But I just looked at the setlists from the last few shows and the song selection is all over the place.

Doesn't he use a COMPUTER to select the next song in the setlist??? In order to avoid repeating songs from the last few shows and from the last time he played the venue. So, blame the frickin computer!

Maybe that is a better discussion point... Does the music suffer from computer selection of songs???

Oh yeah and Phil's book is pretty interesting, except he takes about Jill a lot and it gets slow at times. Definitely a good read tho, some awesome stories. Touches on a lot of things that get brought up on this board.

Bob keeps a data base of all his shows. He says he always checks the setlist from the last time they were in town to make sure the show is not a repeat' from the last time. He also uses the computer to make sure he does not play the same stuff too soon on a given tour.

It's kinda of like keeping beer caps in your pocket, so you know how many beers you have had since the last time you changed your jeans...

I disagree with the overall sentiment of country miles argument. I am glad they still all get out and play. I don't jump on the bus like i used to, but i do try to catch as many shows in my area as possible.

I do kind of agree with the statements about Jerry being the Dead. I understand he wasn't the be all- end all, but if you had all 5 guys and say David Nelson on lead instead of Jerry, would we all be here discussing this topic 40 years later??? I don't think so. Jerry was the person they all wanted to be with, and play with. Its been written and eluded to several times in the books about them. I think Bobby grew into his role with the Dead, but i also think there was plently of options at the time (mid - late 60's)that could have stepped in and taken his spot. So to end my rant, yes-- Jerry was the most important member of the band, but im glad the rest of them play still!!!

Without Bobby the GD would have gotten as big as any JG club band.

Most fans love the dichotomy of Bobby and Jerry: song, lyrics, song structure, countering guitars, etc.

Most other collaborating musicians folded under Jerry.

Bobby stood next to him.

Jerry says in countless interviews that what Bobby did pushed him.

So if Bobby pushed him and helped him to reach his full potential, would he have found that without Bobby?

Would their be a legion of touring fans for the JGB had it not been for the GD?

Would their have been the same energy of shows without:
Jerry vs. Bobby songs
Hunter vs. Barlow songs
etc?

Would Jerry have had the same energy with just a rhythm player?

I base most of my argument on this concept - Bobby knew so much about theory, inversions, etc that anyone with similar knowledge would be looking for a lead guitar role in a band and butted against Jerry.

I agree with the fact that Bobby turned out to be the perfect fit. To give Jerry new planes to solo over. I also think that the Grateful dead, coming out of their collaberation with Kesey and the Acid tests we're already well on their way to becoming the touring behemoth I got to see in the 80's and 90's. So as long as Jerry was present, with all that talent and charisma they would have reached similiar peaks also. I think that Pigpen had the biggest influence on jerry's playing early on. If it wasn't for Pig, Jerry would have found a group of guys and done bluegrass pickin for a livin ( for all we know)
Anyway, it doesn't bother me that Bobby is doing Jerry tunes. Personally i think Ratdog is good, but they always have lacked that little something(whatever it is). A little to much like the Dead in a lounge act setting. Bobby doesn't even sing the songs anymore, he does almost a spoken word thing.
