Got to go with Strummin about some shows from the early 90s...saw a bunch of them and some were jaw dropping inspired shows with energy that hearkened back to the 70s...The video Anthem to Beauty Lesh says he thinks the band started running on inertia around 92, if my memory serves me right.Anyway I'm going to see Bobby in mid December and I'm really anxious to hear some GRATEFUL DEAD tunes as performed by one of the Founding Fathers.

I've read in more than one location that Vince was both very inspiring for Jerry to play with and a great person to be in a band with taboot! Without Vince would the same energy we heard from JG in some early 90s shows be there? Maybe not.

In that respect Vince was the thyroid

I mean Jerry seemed to go in the tank after the death of Brent.
Seemed out of it/didnt care as much.Drugs.
I dont think Vince had the impact on Jerry that Brent had when he came in.
The only things about Vince the band mate I heard were negative.The fact that after Jerry died the band cut the ties with him could lend itself to either argument.
I only went to two shows after Brent died,so you might be right.

Vince was estranged from the band because he tried to commit suicide while on tour with Ratdog. Rumor has it that Bobby took a hard stance against people who either used alot and VW, IIRC, swallowed a bunch of pills. Kinda a double whammy.

Didn't Jerry throw Phil down the stairs after he thought a show sucked cuz of Phil? Didn't they use those cut on Anthem cuz they rocked?

LOL, totally side-tracking but no, I never read that. But I personally own some stellar shows from the 90s. Not my favorite era and the shows were extremely hit or miss to point of feeling bipolar I'd imagine but he had some energy that was like WOW!

Let's not forget though what else changed - in-ear monitors. The band is playing live with a custom studio mix in their ears. A few sources say that it hurt the overall groove.

Maybe it's the isolation of being from the city I was, but I really didn't look at the Dead that much as individuals back then. One of the things I touted to my friends about the Dead is that you didn't hear about the 'super models and actresses they were dating', their homes, where they were seen and who with, like you did about the Jaggers and Claptons etc. They are music embodied, I'd enthuse. That's what is important to us Deadheads I'd say.
Of course an inquisative person learns more, and since I gravitate toward lead; Jerry became the person I attempted to emulate musically, but the band as a whole was retained in my focus.

yes yes in searching for the sound phils says it was a combo of that and playing in big arenas which he called the "megadead" years that affected the overall sound, because a big part of there sound was crowd interaction and in a huge arena it's harder to obtain that intimate feeling...

They also said that it wasn't a rigerous audtion.....basically they took Vince because he had "decent chops and could hit the high notes".

Saw Bobby last week at the Palace Theater in Albany and was disappointed. Great Terrapin! I'll give Ratdog that but it seemed like the music (and Kimock is great) is sorely lacking a "knockout" punch. Don't get me wrong, I had a good time but it really did feel, scene included, like a nostalgia act. Bobby should hang up the "Jerry" tunes and make NEW music, not reinvented versions of old songs and bust out more of his tunes like Bombs Away, Dark Hollow, etc. There's gotta be more out there music-wise, especially for $40 tickets.

I thought those Ratdog shows in late '95 were amazing. I thought Bobby doing Bobby stuff was just great. I am really just no into Bob singing Jerry tunes and some other guys doing their version of Jerry on the guitar.

For Bob, I think the peak of his non Dead stuff was the duo stuff with Rob.

I agree that Kimock has a lot to do with song selection presently....but, how can one posibly complain about "too many Jerry songs"? Isn't that an oxymoron?

I think, and it has been a long thread, wasn't too many Jerry songs, it was no Bob songs.

Can anyone imagine if their places were reversed, and Bob was gone and Jerry the survivor? I just can't really picture Jerry singing Bob's old tunes.
