Let me rephrase that "Jerry was the dead" statement


Bobby would probably not be a musician without jerry. Phil would be a classical music composer.

Bobby and Phil and the rest of the gang were a big part of the dead. you guys must be crazy if you think that jerry wasnt the main reason the grateful dead came to be. ( not saying any of you think that )

You must be crazy to think he was. Or should I say I disagree.

Pig was the man for a long time. Jerry was shy and quirky. A front man with strong vocals was what was needed. Maybe if not for Pig Jerry woulda never got out of the Bay area???

Bob not be a musician. Laughable, do you know the history of any of these guys? Bobby was playing before the dead. Most likely Bobby would been a country player.

I mean this is all speculation... there is something to be said about being in the right place at the right time...
think about all the San Francisco bands in the sixties/seventies... people we've never heard of, talented paople who wound up selling cars or solar panels or working in the library.
I don't know what would have happened to any of them, if not for the Dead...Bobby has always been into food and diet and excercise, maybe he would have opened a restaurent, who knows?
You know, Jerry's first wife was a performing musician, did she continue with being a musician,after her and Jer split? no, so who can say.

Jerry is surrounded by a lot of hype, which makes him glow a lot brighter than the other ones in the eyes of the fans. Which was well deserved. But each member of the dead were incredibly distinctive, creative, spontaneous, energetic, talented, exploratory-risk taking musicians.

If any single one of them had never existed yet the band still came to be, I'd bet their sound would be quite different. Jerry's influence was major and his absence may have caused the band never to form at all. And if good old Bobby Weir had never lived, the Dead would have sounded drastically different with anyone else on rhythm guitar. It would be unrecognizable. Phils bass playing is so unique and perfect for the interplay of the Dead. If the Dead ended up with some bassist plugging away at 90% root notes the band would suck.

My analogy compares the grateful dead to the organ systems inside a human torso. Jerry would be the heart, Bobby the lungs, Phil the liver, Mickey and Billy would be the kidneys, and any given keys player would the stomach/intestinal tract. Remove any unit from the system and the entire system fails.

Some smaller, but still important organs can be removed (gallbladder (Pig maybe)) and the system would survive. But it would never be quite the same again.

And yet I feel compelled to offer yet another theory.
The "Solar System"Theory.
Jerry = the Sun
The rest of the guys are planets.
Without the sun poof nothing.
Ah and what happened when Pluto got sent to the minors?

I was with ya up until here:

Pig was the original leader and front man. I cannot understand the logic behind the original front man being unimportant.

What about TC as he pushed them into the world of psychedelic jams?

What about Keith who with classical training pushed them into a band with 3 strong midrange instruments?

What Brent who brought soul & R&B back into the band a heavy B3 sound?

What about Vince who, arguably, inserted a new vibe into the group and penned tunes that sounded like GD tunes. Sure he wasn't received well but if you listen to Samba in the Rain it almost sounds like the words were by Hunter, chords by weir, singing by Phil.

Vince = the end of the line for the Dead to me.
Pig Pen was a huge factor in the early stages.
If he was an organ I wouldnt remove it 'cause that would be like cutting your heart out.

I've read in more than one location that Vince was both very inspiring for Jerry to play with and a great person to be in a band with taboot! Without Vince would the same energy we heard from JG in some early 90s shows be there? Maybe not.

In that respect Vince was the thyroid

I guess.
I mean Jerry seemed to go in the tank after the death of Brent.
Seemed out of it/didnt care as much.Drugs.
I dont think Vince had the impact on Jerry that Brent had when he came in.
The only things about Vince the band mate I heard were negative.The fact that after Jerry died the band cut the ties with him could lend itself to either argument.
I only went to two shows after Brent died,so you might be right.
Anyway IS IT TIME TO EAT YET?
