wow, this is certainly a touchy subject. not all people hunt JUST to Kill Something. the people/families I know that have hunters in them always eat what they shoot and also spread the love around, venison steaks for the whole family all winter!!! what's wrong with that??? you take what you need from nature (meat, resources, etc.) to live and not more than that. sure is better than buying everything from a grocery store.

for you vegetarians who think killing animals is wrong? how do you know celery doesn't scream as you cut the stalks?

and yes, I support the 2nd ammendment!!! if regular citizens didn't have guns, what would we do if at some point the general populus realized the government was overstepping its boundaries. better to have a gun and die defending your freedom than just throwing yourself under a tank (both actions prove a point, just think about which one you'd like?)

of course, there are the gun-happy idiots of whom i would stay clear by a 50 mile radius, if possible.

again, i spoke for myself. sure there is an adrenaline rush when the animal approaches, but the payoff isn't the kill for ME. i never spoke for anyone else(at least i'm sure i didn't. i'm not going back and reading;)

see were on the same page here. the fishermen don't fish for the kill. they preach that they are being ecological by releasing the fish, but they just mostly end up dying.i never preached or b.s.'d and don't like that stuff either. it seems were in a sort of agreement. and again, SOME fit what you're saying, but probably not even a majority.

.....I am not a vegetarian, but I can still understand that plants, unlike animals, don't have central nervous systems (which is the part of the body that receives and responds to 'pain' signals). Ethically, let's not pretend that harvesting celery and killing an animal are in the same discussion... why all shots at vegetarians around here? Most vegetarians I know are non meat-eaters because of their concern for their own ecological footprint and the incredible discrepancies between the environmental impacts of a carnivorous life versus that of a vegetarian. They are intelligent individuals who are concerned about what we are leaving behind for future generations. Call that close minded if you want, but I would call it very much the opposite....

i was not taking a shot at vegetarians or vegetarianism. i was just saying that justifying an arguement against guns/hunting by saying vegetarianism is a solution to these ethical/environmental problems is not 100% correct. lots of our vegetables are grown on factory farms that use immense amounts of fertilizers and pesticides/fungicidies. is that what we want to be leaving behind for future generations? organic/local agriculture is a step in the right direction, and if you are supporting local farmers, then more power to you.

sure, large scale animal production is nasty and it uses a lot of water and the issue of what to do with the manure as most animal farms are located far away from where the food comes from to feed the animals, which is where the manure needs to go back to. so there you have the issue of long distance transport and all the fossil fuel usage.

but, the discussion was about hunting. hunting is a practice that can be sustainable (not killing more than you can eat) and the meat you get is much better than from the store. also, lets not forget that some cultures (like Inuits) live largely off of protein diets; they eat salmon all winter long. so not eating meat is not always your "best choice".

i don't think you are wrong, just that the issue is a little more complex than some would like to believe.

when you mention carniverous vs veggie diet and the environmental imapcts, you are part right, but not all meat comes from factory farms and not all veggie production is environmentally friendly.

just sayin it how it is.

I don't hunt. Just not into it. Don't preach against those that do either as long as they eat/use what they kill.

The point we all have to agree on is that we (humans) are animals. We have evolved over millions of years to become perfect omnivores. Our teeth have evolved so we can eat both fauna and flora. Our canine teeth have shortened a bit though, which I understand now to be a result of building better weapons over time and using teeth less and less for killing. Can't fight the facts that we are built for it.

I think using high powered scopes and other technological advancements have made the playing field a little uneven, but I guess it is more efficient and less messy than bludgeoning the beast with a rock.

Question for the hunters. Do bear hunters eat the meat or do it for the trophy and thrill? I like bears.

I see your point about the armory. However, one can also look at to be just the stronger hunting the weaker. We see that in nature all the time. A mature lion will scatter a herd of zebra into chaos and zero in on the infant whose survival skills are limited by both their age and species.
