I have seen the tape from 4/4/63 with Jer and his then wife Sara. Unfortunately I can't remember where it was posted. There were tapes made at the Tangent from late 62 to 64 but I have never personally heard or seen them. There is a tape of 6/11/62 from the Boar's Head labeled as the SleepyHollowHogStompers, but once again I've never heard it. All of this probably doesn't help you much, but there are tapes out there of these early years and if you happen to come across them I know I'd be interested in taking a listen. If it was the founding members of the dead playing in '64 wouldn't that be the warlocks?

I think the warlocks formed in 64 and changed their name to the grateful dead in 65, but i might wrong about that.

Jerry and Bob met in late 1963. Jerry already knew Pig and Lesh at this point.

Spring 1964 Mother McCree's Uptown Jug Champions was formed. Jerry, Bob, Pig, Dave Parker, Tom Stone and Mike Garbett.

Late 1964 Jerry, Pig and Bob form The Warlocks. Dana Morgan(the guy Jerry worked with at the music store as a teacher) on bass and Billy on drums. They played their first gig in MAY 1965. Phil replaced Morgan after about a month and a few gigs.

They changed their name to The Grateful Dead in NOVEMBER 1965. First GD show was an acid test in San Jose.
