I'm going to have to disagree with Pete B and recommend Sweet Chaos. I thought it was a great book. Yeah it's definitely more a book about where the Dead fit in in the 60's and 70's than a book just about the Dead but I thought it was great, fairly academic stuff. And since all my favorite Dead books have already been mentioned I'll talk about two more books that aren't really Dead bio books or anything. Another great book is Traces of the Spirit. It's a book about music and spirituality and there's a whole chapter called "Eyes of the World" about The Dead and Deadheads. It basically compares LSD and Dead shows to communion wine and church. Another great book is Polaroids from the Dead by Douglas Coupland (Generation X.) It's a collection of short stories based around an '89 dead show. Really great stuff but I like like most Coupland anyway.

fwiw, I think we are in complete agreement.
I guess my thoughts were coming from more of a GD Historian-esque angle, where it recieved a lower ranking than several other GD books, imho.

Thanks, PB, but I've got my own copy. It was interesting but more or less a personal memoir of someone who was only marginally connected with the GD: the lighting engineer's sister.

Man how could I forget Signpost. Just finished that one about 2 months ago and thought it was awesome. The Stoned Sunday Rap (Second half of the book) was frikkin great. Not really Dead oriented or anything but it was just "out there"

yeah, man, i have it and have read it a few times. its great because its like hanging out in jerry's living room, smoking a joint with him and just rapping about everything under the sky. thats basically what it is, a friendly conversation about perspectives on life and music and philosophy.

A direct quote from "The Dead" by Hank Harrison, "Pig may have been gross to some people, but Janis loved him. When she died Pig Pen started to die"..... Come on now, they were no where NEAR that close. In every Dead book ive read there has been no mention of him. In the Illustrated Trip the only mention is a 2 sentence box about him being manager for like a week. He talks about up close encounters which im sure never happened. Involving Jerry too

Janis wasn't a very pretty woman but I always loved that topless pic of her. She actually looks innocent and very beautiful in that pic. There is a print of it in the R&R Hall of Fame.

My wife bought me Sweet Chaos with the best intentions,but I never could bring myself to read it. All the crap about the Hell's Angels just completely turns me off.
