I started to put this in shakedown's Eyes video thread, but I didn't want to threadjack.

Regarding the tab that everyone wants for a vid, I've been thinking. Tab is a two way street. It's easier for people to learn and pick up songs, but overall I think it makes you less of a guitar player. You don't have to "hear" the song so much if you have the tab. Back in the day, they used to learn songs by playing records (sortof like oversized CDs :) slowly. Over and over and over and over. That really trains your ear much better than having a pre-tabbed out song/lick/whatever. I'm guilty as hell of "abusing" tab. If I can't find a tab for a song, I'm pretty much useless (my wife can back me up on that :). But it's quick and easy and we're all looking for a shortcut or something to help us along a little quicker. Sometimes I wish I learned guitar before tab--I might've been a better player.

In these videos, you can clearly see and hear the notes. It takes much longer and is not as instantaneously gratifying to sit down with the vid, listen to the song, see where he's playing and work it out for yourself. But I think overall it will make you a better player (if only for that song). I have that DVD that teaches Dead songs and it doesn't include tab. At first I was bummed out and turned off by it. But after awhile, playing the video over and over and over, watching what he's doing, listening to what he's doing, I was able to figure it out on my own. And while it took about 50x as long, it seemed a little more gratifying. YMMV.

My point? None really. If someone posts the tab for a video they do, great! If not, no biggie. Think of it as a challenge and try and work it out for yourself. You might be surprised.

Tab is good;tab is bad.
Unless you have heard the song,tab is useless.
Tab is bad cause you dont always get the "right" fingerings from the the tab.Like if someone is playing a chord shape,but only some of the notes are sounded.Jerry plays solos off the chords;positioning is key to getting around the fretboard.
Tab is good 'cause it gets you in the ballpark(hopefully).
Lots of classical music types,say they wish they played music without reading,while many rock guitarists like me wish they could read music.
Listening is the key like the above has stated.
Legendary licks dvd is real good.Waiting for the 2nd video.
Anyway you learn something is good.

i agree with you, to a point... If I had internet access at home, I could sit down with these videos and a guitar, and figure out some of these riffs the old fashioned way, but unfortunately I don't have network access at home. My only chance is to print out a tab at work and then bring it home and hope I can remember the tune to put to the tab hours later - a challenge in itself.

To your point, or lack thereof ("My point? None really."), if someone posts the tab then great. If not, then I'll just have to sneak my guitar into work...

Some of us (me) are just plain idiots and need tabs. I suppose we could have to it the old fashioned way and actually learn how to read sheet music. I'm in awe at anybody that can sit down and play a piece of sheet music as they are reading it. Especially for the first time they lay their eyes on it.

Sheet music or tab? I can't read "real music", i.e. sheet music, for shit. Just tab & chords. Never grew up "musically" so that time passed me by.

As for posting tabs w/ vids, I'll see if I can go back & add some to mine, I think it's a good idea....just gonna take a lil' work is all.
