Saw this bluegrass band in boulder, co. last night. played only dead tunes it was neat- but i am not sure if it was any good or not. Some spots were really nice-the slide guitarist was dialed in. others, not so good. Just wondering what your oppinion of grateful dead bluegrass style, except the obvious delights rooted in bluegrass. Chuch!

Personally, I've always loved it. To me even their most psychedelic forays had their roots in bluegrass and the roots of bluegrass.I used to play with this near virtuoso bluegrass guitarist. We'd take "liberties" with songs like eyes of the world and china doll. Years ago I did St. Stephen as an Irish fiddle tune. If I knew how, I'd tab it out.

In my humble opinion.....

Whatever gets you there..... I'm sure someone could crank out a decent "Ripple" on a Bavarian Marsh Harp in Em and it would be interesting ... for a while.
I did time in a metal band for a while and we did some unique things to some Dead tunes that many would consider a “slap in the face”. However, I had more fun metal-izing those tunes than I did playing the stuff they were paying me to play… Obviously I did not keep that gig for long.

It’s all (Mostly) good. There is / was a band out there that covered all types of music (Mostly metal) in a Bluegrass motif. (Look ‘em up, they sound to be decent players – “Hayseed Dixie” a play off of AC/DC….. get it….?) The point is, we all hear it differently, and thus our interpretation will be different, some more different than others.

IMO… I like to hear someone else’s take on something I have heard in my head one way for so many years. A different direction would be to find some old Jesse Fuller or Lightnin’ Hopkins stuff, hear how the dead interpreted something that was 40, 50, 60 years their “Junior”.

the Disc Pickin on the Dead was really well done I thought. The great thing about these songs is you use any style and it will sound good. bluegrass, reggae, as stated by the bozo bus metal. IMHO they are universal

A friend of mine showed me a Keller Williams disc where he played with the Keels. Don't recall the name, but it had Duprees and Loser (interestingly, Beck's loser into GD's Loser) on it. Only got to listen to it once or twice but sounded good to me.

yea that is the Keller and the Keels CD , got a great New Horizon's on it as well.

I saw that Grateful Grass lineup friday night at The Stage Stop and thpught it was awesome, alot of improvisation, great players, Anders the dobro player is really good, Pete Kartsounes who played guitar and sang is great as well, and the cat who played the mando is a three time national competition winner, all great players, the upright bass was right on .... it was a great show ... the monster is this weekend at The Stage Stop however, Jerry pickin with Scott LAw, Vince Herman, Anders Beck, Cliff Starbuck, Christian Theele, and Jeff Austin !!!!! Gonna rage !!!
