That sounds very sad maximinus, especially me being
a newcomer to the Grateful Dead scene. I'd hate to
be all alone in the love for the band and their music.

I never got to see them live, but when listening to
Live/Dead, Europe '72, American Beauty and various pick's and concerts...The music moves me and I can
only imagine how wonderful it was to be THERE.

Pity there's not more of us in Europe..

I know for a FACT that Strummin' didnt mean anything derogatory in his posting. i saw no finger pointing, blaming or excuse making in his comment. I think it has been taken way out of context. Strummin is a good person, a GREAT contributer and a scholar with immense knowledge of music , guitar and the Dead. noone ever called anyone a #$%$%! or a ^&$^@^%&#%.

show some love for a fellow head.

the futures here, we are it, we are on our own.

There are almost *no* deadheads in this area, and pretty much nobody of my age (34) who actually knows who the GD are.

I'm also the bass player in the Cosmic Charlies, so I actually get exposed to what little audience there is for GD music in this part of the world, and it's pretty small (and shrinking)
I was in London in '91 and ran into a bunch of heads. Maybe it was cuz Jerry was still around? I don't know, but I ran into at least one head everywhere I went (Ireland, Amsterdam, Scotland, and as previously stated England)

Search for the European Deadhead continues……

There have been signs of this elusive creature and not far from where I live, half an hours drive.

My friend was working at a house when he saw the first signs that could indicate a possible sighting - numerous CDs.

Now this can all too often reveal nothing of further interest but getting into discussion with the house owner found Pink Floyd, Jimi Hendrix and then……. both Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia Band recordings!!!

Then to top it off guitars.

So tomorrow I go in search of a fellow European Deadhead….. Let the music play!!!

my wife is a european from the former communist block and while she (born circa 1980) had always thought of the dead as mostly space music and nothing coherent, her pa thinks they are about the coolest thing since sliced bread. on my wife's side, when i first met her and she asked, "who is playing this?" and to her surprise it was the dead. for the most part she actually loves the JGB and has sort of gotten into some of the tighter, more formated dead songs. i think for kids who grew up in communism they just totally missed a good deal of great music purely because the gov't and big brother stamped it out.

as for her dad, the 60's and 70's america is where his dreams lie still and the dead are big on his list. less of a deadhead and more of a fan. i had a really cool conversation with my wife's mathematics teacher from grade school (contemporary to father inlaw) who told me the story of how him and a friend huddled in a basement and listened to free europe(might have gotten this name wrong) radio and learned to play trucking. not to mention that listen to that station was illegal. ha, that's kinda funny elicit dead song learning.

hard for free wheelin' amereekans (at least for me who grew up after a lot of wild socialogical happenings happened in the US)to imagine that level of big bro. as for western europe, i used to live in ireland and there were a few deadheads, but mostly muscians and not really in the general public. similar experience in the netherlands when i was there.

*disclaimer: above is only the observations of a fool, and not intended to be an accurate portrayal of an entire body of people or peoples. :peas:

I have no hard evidence of this, it is just observation. But, I think you are far more likely to find a Deadhead in the UK than in mainland Europe, where it seems like the music gets less rock oriented.

Frenchdead, we should meet up in the summer and play through Reckoning (I'll only be toting a traveler acoustic----that i hope to find cheap)
