Been in a Hendrix stage lately, and I thought it would be a good time to ask a question I have been wonderin' for a while: how many of you are Hendrix fans. It seems that there would be a lot of crossover between Dead and Hendrix fans, beacuse they started in the same era and were sort of the same scene while Hendrix was around. Jerry and Jimi are totally different players, both amazing, but the style just isn't the same.

So how many of you out there are into the Jimi?

i like hendrix and woul dsay he's one of the best guitar players around. i like jerry better because with hendrix it was all rock and roll, jerry was a master of emotional melodic playing where hendrix was just real good at rythmic blues playing.

Always been into Jimi. He was the shit. The best, period. Love Jerry's playing to death, but if there was one person I would have loved to see live, it's him. The Dead do HIS version of All Along the Watchtower, not Bob's. His playing was phenomenal. I have several DVD's and even instructional DVD's and I still am learning things from watching Jimi. Unbelievable.

Jimi is the Michael Jordan of guitar.

That was how Trey put it and I think it hits it on the head.

Jimi's playing on all the Band of Gypsies stuff pushes the envelope about as hard as I think any musician has ever pushed IMO.

A lot of people forget how great of a singer he was too, mostly because he owned the guitar like it had never been owned before.

Jimi is so good that sometimes I am afraid to pick up my Strat.

I was listening to hendrix way before I was into the dead. Curiously enough I too have just begun on a new jimi phase, downloading lots of live stuff and giving a relisten to the old classic albums. Like him or not jimi lives on in his influence over the electric guitar, which, if you play electric guitar, most likely includes you.

to me jimi was a genius in the true sense of the word, maybe i'll put on side c of electric lady land now

I am definently with all of you. Oscillation I know right where you are at, I just got done downloading a bunch of new live Jimi and videos and stuff. The Band of Gypsy's stuff is just out of this world, really killer stuff. Jimi is just totally on another level and he really makes the guitar his thing, making it do what he wants, not playin' by its rules... thats always been my fascination with Hendrix anyways.

It is my firm belief that while Jimi was here he definitley was able to access some parallel dimension/universe. Not saying he was a God but it was like he was in tune to something other-worldly.

Rolling Stone did an article a couple years ago about jimi landing in Europe unknown with nothing more than a guitar and the clothes on his back and less that 24 hrs. later he was a sensation there. It was an incredible story.

Ya know, his high distortion stuff was good, but the real amazing stuff he did in my opinion was stuff like 1983 (a Merman i should turn to be), Little Wing, The Wind Cries Mary, Castles made of sand, stuff like that.
Although Bold as Love might be one of the greatest studio recordings ever.

Him and Jerry diddn't have much in common, but they did both have a talent for making Bob Dylan songs...sound good.

Funny this topic comes up, I was just thinking about this the other day. I was listening to "First Rays of the New Rising Sun" and I had this thought that Jimi, like Jerry, wasn't really a musician. He WAS music. They had such a feel, or I dunno an access to the spirit or the soul of music, of where it comes from, that they went far beyond simply being musicians. I seriously doubt if there was anything else they could have done. They couldn't have been doctors or architects or carpenters. They came into the world to make music and never really had any other option. I mean there are and have been a lot of brilliant musicians in recent history, but folks like Jimi or Jerry had something untouchable, something inexplicable. I dunno if that makes sense or not.

Honestly there aren't really many people that I'd say that about. Perhaps Miles, or Monk, or Bird. Zappa or Waits maybe.

Anyway, just my 2 pesos worth of thoughts. But to answer the original question, yes, I love Jimi.

I really love the slower, more major sounding rock songs such as Litte Wing, The Wind Cries Mary, May This Be Love....
There you hear what he could do best:
Rhythm Guitar, what a genius he sounded like two guitars playin at once, nobody played Rhythm Guitar like him before...

BTW: It's so frustrating that Jimi and the Dead never played together and why haven't they?=(

All you have to say is "Jimi" and people(well guitarist anyway)know who you are talking about.
I heard they were gonna jam together,but Jimi never showed on the agreed night.Then at another gig he showed up and wanted to jam but the Dead got pissy and it never went down.Anyone else hear that?I think I read that in some Grateful Dead book....
