He's an amazing rhythm guitarist, he leads that band more than John K. does. It's just fascinating watching him play, he really feels the music and shouts out the lyrics effortlessly. Of course his playing mirrors that of Bobby's, he's also putting his own flavor in it.

definitly very talented in recreating bobby's playing style, and also his way of singing. Sometimes he even looks like Bobby....xD

I just read this in an interview:

Eaton:
We also have a repertoire larger than the Dead had at any given time. We can string songs together they were never able to do,....

That sounds kind of weird to me, because the big part of the DSO repertoire wouldn't even exist without the Dead, how can he dare saying that?

I think what he's saying is that DSO plays all of the Dead's (and JGB's) material at any given moment, whereas the Dead, in any given time period, had a certain repetoire for the most part. That is to say, you knew the Dead weren't going to pull out a St. Stephen in '89 because they just weren't playing it anymore. Then again, hindsight's always 20-20. But the Dead being the Dead, were always capable of pulling out a nugget every now and again, ala the RFK Casey Jones. DSO on the other hand will pull anything out at any given time, there less restrictive, I guess, then the Dead's setlist.

Taking Eaton's quote in context, I can see what you mean, but again, I don't think he meant it that way. These guys have nothing but the utmost respect for the Dead.

In regards to the topic, yes, Eaton is pretty damn sick. And I'm sure he worked DAMN hard to get there, too. Smart guy, obviously.

Yea Rob is sick ... guys got Grammys .... three I believe .... and yes he has unlimited amounts of respect for the music he plays and the men who wrote the songs and played them the way they did ... first ... Rob has seen ALOT more shows than most of us, and I saw 300 and I know he saw quite a few more than I did ... taped alot of them ... you can get his stuff on archive ... love his playing but they still can't get thirty bucks out of me .... I am pretty picky who I go see live verses the ticket price asked etc

and so many more combos... he just means they have no restraint in making up original setlists because they are not bound to playing just dead tunes. they sometimes combine eras, jgb tunes, beatles songs, and just try new combos out...pretty cool if u ask me i love elective sets

Exactly. The Dead could do whatever the eff they wanted, but what they did is what made them the Dead, so it's kind of a moot point if you ask me, smil_smile_smile.

come on man you know what i mean the dead are the dead i'm not saying dso is better or the dead couldn't do that, of course they could, what the f?....i'm explaining eaton's point not saying the dead couldn't do that...people are always saying dso is just playing note for note setlists, but hell no, they are taking the experience, essence, and whole journey and exploring with it not doing it better, hell no, just explore and adding and making it what the dead made it a grand experience through music, something you feel in your soul...so exactly "The Dead could do whatever the eff they wanted, but what they did is what made them the Dead" and that is more of what dso does then just performing dead tunes, the music plays the band...so thats that, moot point, so be it, one man gathers what another man spills, so back to phil streamin live waaa woooooo!!!

I have always been impressed with DSO's setlists. Forget the argument - in other topics - about originality; They are a cover band, and a damn good one at that. I would love any info on the band and their past. Thanks.

Must be a different LOM (obviously not the one w/ Jerry & Merl). I didn't realize he did work w/ Pat Metheny, nor a producer/engineer. Cool stuff, thanks.
