What is Seastones and Phil And Ned??

is like an electronic segment that appeared in 1974 and it uses a whole set, but i dont know what it is??

is seastones and phil and ned the same thing?
what does the name means??

ned lagin is a keyboardist who was pals with phil. they did weird trance ambient sets or something like that. theres an interview with ned in Conversations with the Dead.

Back when the Dead started their own label and splintered off to make solo albums like the Hunter 'Tales of the Rum Runners' and Keith and Donna's album, (don't recall that name), and Garcia's 'Old and in the Way'; Phil and Ned had a release 'Seastones'. I was a member of the fan club (sent in from the "skeleton" album inside cover) and I got some 45 sized records with preview releases.
In support of that record Phil and Ned Lagin would play a set in Dead shows in '74. I witnessed that at the 06-16 show at the Des Moines county fair grounds. I don't know what to call it but I will tell you they shook the ground!

but dont waste your time it totaly sucks...its basically bullshit, i dont know who would like this stuff maybe dogs or some animal that doesnt hear frequencies as we do...if this stuff is music then a running microwave is "music"

NAH, spacey stuff has its purpose but it serves its purpose seastones is no good man...it is annoying as hell...i can listen to "space" whenever in any "frame of mind" as u say...seastones just makes me want to be deaf and if i was tripping it would be more annoying...it was like they were trying to push the limits of "space/feedback" but they took it too far...its like nails on a chalkboard/amp feedback/ ambient bass crossover hum....

no melody no rhythm no sense of timing so notes its all just bizzare tones

The little records were just cuts off the albums themselves. For instance the 'Old and in the Way' record had that title cut backed with 'Panama Red'. Both are the versions on the original OAITW album. The Keith and Donna cuts were I believe unfinished basic tracks if I recall. I don't know where you'd find them except maybe on ebay!

Happily, my ears and brain function very differently than yours.

Not that I would put P&N on, were I charged with running the stereo at a hoppin' party or even a mellow poker game, but I like it as a sort of static-yet-gnarly audio background for around the house, when my mind and/or body is occupied with other tasks or just taking a lil break from jammin dance beats.

When they were doing them in 74, P&N was basically the soundtrack to setbreak. Go wander, find your pals, flow with the weirdness, chat up a cute girl, join a circle... occaissionally react to the bizarre sound textures, but it's not necessarily the focus. I don't think it was ever really meant as "foreground" music. Once in awhile, the Dead would come onstage and join into the Seastones flow and it would jam into an actual song to start Set II. For example, the Dark Star from the GD Movie bonus disc (10/18/74) flows out of a Phil & Ned.

Yeah...I was amember of the fan club way back when and they also sent me a promo pack when they were semi"retired"...there was a newsletter some cool postcards and the sample discs...I believe they were around the size of a 45 but were actually 33 and a 3rd... I came across this pack a few mos. ago still pretty much intact...I need to take better care of it...I don't think i even played the samples...but i do remember seeing Ned at a show doing the seastones thing in between sets with Phil as mentioned above...pretty cool discovery of something that i haven't seen in over 30 yrs.!

Do you also remember (and I barely do so I hope I have this right) that there was some discussion in the written materials about how the Dead were looking into a new album medium where a laser would read the surface of a triangular shaped object to play? Foreshadowed the CD disc by 25 years, eh?

I found it! so, along with the samplers came postcards and two newsletters dated 1975 the newsletters talk about the Dead being on hiatus and working on their own individual projects...I quote verbatim from the newsletter..."Seastones, the ned lagin and phil lesh sampler contains onlt the basic structure of the piece. You'll be blown away by the difference. The music is interesting as it's really a union of music, biology and physics. the effect that it's having on the studio personnel and musicans is amazing. It makes people act as if they were high(exactly as Ned predicted years ago) I believe the word is stoning. The album will have vocals by David Crosby, Grace Slick Jerry Garcia and David Freiberg."....Now here is the reference Django was referring to... "...the replacement of records and tapes as musical reproduction forms and the change over to holographically encoding our music on a one inch pyrimid to be read by an optical fiber. this would have the advantage of no surface noise, no pops,scratches, skips or any of the baloney about present day records and tapes. The pyramid's musical quality would not change until it is broken clean through which would not be easy even on purpose. Technically, it is possible to make a small player(same size as about two packs of cigarettes) to retail in stores for about $13.00. Of course we have lots of music to listen to over such a device and the pyramids would cost no more than a record and perhaps less." Signed Anton Round...WOW!...
