So, not DEAD related, but I'm running out of places to ask for help:

My VCR died and I have a bunch of music shit on video and don't want to just buy a cheapo VCR, but would like to burn them to dvd. So, has anyone bought one of the vcr/dvd recorder combos? Any advice? Any help? Thanks!

Lots of cheap VCRs at Goodwill!
I used to be a big cassette man but now I have no interest in them. I've been spoiled by digital files, even though as of yet my only option is to burn them to CD. I'm speaking audio, but I really can't think of why I would be in need of recording my tapes to CD with all the dead out there on archive and such. Perhaps this will eventually be the case with video content as well.

Yes, the ones I'm looking at record a tv show on either the vcr or the dvd. They also will convert video so you can record your old vcr tapes onto dvd, but some of the tapes have protection on them. I have some old instructional video's that I don't want to lose, along with some music I taped off pay-per-view channels that I don't want to buy again (Woodstock, Last Waltz, Janis, Johnny Cash, even some early dead). They run about $250 but I haven't heard much else. Was hoping someone had one and could at least tell me whether it's worth it or not.

I have one and it works great.

I usually record the VHS to DVD then rip the DVD to my laptop hard drive. I then do some additional editing, like maving the chapter markers where I want and kill the dead spaces. Then I build a menu and burn it back to DVD.
