Well shit, its that time again. Im all deaded out, every few months it happens. The difference this time is that I have a bunch of polar opposite bands to pick up the slack. The Germs, Richard Hell, Captain Beefheart, Can, Love, Television. Maybe DSO'll this thursday will pick it up. WELL the question I have is concerning acoustic guitar. I have a real shitty one, maybe 150$. I have a few lined up, Epiphone J500R I think its called, Alvarez, Guild, and some Takamine. Jerrys acoustic choices are a little out of my reach so, any suggestions? I got about 550, can go up to around 600. (I do so hate one sided threads)

Martin DX1...around 500 bucks...great guitar...got it around 2 yrs ago through musicans friend...took a chance buying it on line but it was perfect...Mine is made in USA and I heard they are now being made in Mexico...not 100% sure.

I have a Martin DXM. It sounds an plays great! I have had it for 5-6 years. The body is made of a high pressure laminate, and not solid wood. I think the top of the DX1 is a solid wood. The neck on my DMX feels great and the sound is excellent. My theory is the high pressure laminate is more durable than solid wood. I have rarely put mine in its case.. I live in Minnesota and the winters are dry. The neck is straight as an arrow and it still sounds great.

Yes the tops on the DX1 is a solid top and the rest is what you described...Just a great sounding guitar...I rarely put mine in the case either because it's rarely out of my hands!

I'm really not as qualified as a lot of people here, but in my experience, Washburn guitars sound really pretty and they make a nice all-wood instrument. There's also a company called Seagull that makes a nice acoustic that I like.

Yeah...I used to have a seagull...very nice guitars that are made in Canada...Mine was about 400 bucks...Upgraded to a gibson 160e(very pricey but what a guitar!) and my Martin which I mentioned in my above post

i say go with the alvarez the "artist series"
models are around 500...alvarez is very underated

their low line of guitars is definately better than most

their high ends are surely sweet also

I'm a big Takamine guy - I love them. They have very good ones around that price range.

The Breedlove acoustic I have is the least expensive acoustic in their Atlas Series line.
It has a satin finish, which I am now convinced is the way to go with an acoustic for maximum tonal/acoustical properties in general (unplugged), but hey, that's just my personal belief and your ear might hear it differently.
Test some same models, satin vs. gloss, if you can.
This one sounds and plays great, but has no onboard electronics (by choice).
I believe they have a few models in their Atlas Series line that do have onboard electronics, and are in your price range.
I think they would be worth checking out if you have a Breedlove dealer in your area.
There are alot of nice sounding/playing acoustics, with/without onboard electronics, in the +/-$500 range.
I happen to like a brighter acoustic sound, so Martins often don't suit my ear.
The Breedlove has the treble-ee brightness of a Taylor, with the throat-ee low mid of a Martin, but with no overbearing darkness or mud whatsoever in the bass range.

ALVAREZ. i have an alvarez acoustic/electric. with some elixer strings and it is beautiful. no fret markers. got awsome pickups in it paid about 450

Elixer strings feel like there is magic underneath my fingers. The only strings I really enjoy.
