your in for a treat i discovered bluegrass music about 2 years ago and has consumed my life, playing it, listening to it, going to watch 65 year old men, who have more talent than a lot of big name bands, jam out in small cafes downtown, but about the bands:

YMSB, railroad, Trampled by Turtles (they did a sick peggy-o at 10k), a banjo player named robert montgomery is amazing, OAITW, Jeff Austin and Chris Castino's cd "tunes from a tin shed" fuses bluegrass,folk, old time, americana all in one great cd, i also love Old Crowe medicine show they are one of the best bands out their right now, union station is always great to listen to, sam bush, bela fleck,

Great list Big_River_Bum! If you like dobro, Mike Auldridge is high on my list, and the work that the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band did on 'Will the circle be Unbroken' with folks like Scruggs and Watson, Roy Acuff and Maybelle Carter is fine!
My all time favorite acoustic musician, who plays across musical genres and is very funny as well is the great David Bromberg. He plays and builds fiddles, mandolin, and the sickest guitar you ever heard. I'm sure a lot of you know him, the "Wanted Dead or Alive' album's studio back up band is the Grateful Dead.

Total understatement. Got to see them once. I think they're history but you should give them a listen if possible.

as for "pure" bluegrass, Del McCrory is one of, if not the best thing out there IMHO at this time.

Someone mentioned the Hickory Project. They're great. The fiddle player, Sue Cunningham is the sister of a great bass player in Pittsburgh whom I gig with. Her husband (Anthony) and her are national fiddle/mando champions. We played a gig with them and they sat in on some tunes. Totally ripped it up. They have an annual festival outside of Wellsboro Pa and they usually have national acts. They were also working together on a project with Vasser Clemens before he died.

Once in a while they (she and her 2 brothers and Anthony) gig under the name The Flying Cunninghams as well. Not to be missed if you get the chance to see them.

Steve Kaufman has some good books, including Bluegrass Guitar Solos That Every Parking Lot Picker Should Know, Vol. 1, which was where I learned a bunch of tunes. This book has the basic melody, then an intermediate version and an advanced version of all the songs. Great for learning how to jazz up the basic melody.

Yonder is amazing. Anybody who hasn't seen them live, definitely go check them out. They're my favorite of the bluegrass/jam genre. Also, I love String Cheese, Leftover Salmon, Railroad Earth, Hot Buttered Rum, and Old Crow Medicine Show.
