I couldnt hear the keyboards, drums were off. Everything was loose, I know im reiterating the same points as before but come on 1 hour break? No explanation even after a shitty first set? Im a little at odds with many of you here, me following in my dads Wharf Rat footsteps but the only ones dancing were really high. Everyone sober hated it. Oh ya and there was this undercover cop next to us, on a walky talky just standing there.
Okay, now I see where you are coming from.

I was close enough to hear Phil conducting the orchestra through the monitor mix. The interplay was very entertaining. Jackie is just a young kid who is having the time of his life playing with the big boys. He made me laugh a number of times because he was so into the moment. He reminds me of Bob Weir before he came of age.

Does anyone remember Bob running around the stage like a rock star/fool and lungeing at the audience?

My wife and I both agreed that the first set was a little too much Jackie. If you missed A Hard Rain's A Gonna Fall, you really missed out on Jackie at his absolute best.

Jackie is on a musical journey and I think by the time this iteration of P&F comes to an end, he will have a significant groundswell of support from the deadhead community.

Jackie has a good voice and I cannot wait to see the energy that he is going to bring, besides the tour closer is a day before my b-day!

I really dont understand how phil still has larry campbell in the band.

His playig is deifitly a step below every other player he has played with. Plain blues solos is his thing.
Phil mus be friends with him or something.

After playing with herring and Haynes for those year how can he be playig with this guy? I just don't understand it.

Not saying I think this is his best line-up but for his sake I truly hope he nails a final collection in his band. IMO, Phil's downside has been a revolving door and never getting as tight as he could have gotten with a solid line-up.

I saw the Glens Falls show with Trey, so I really cant comment too much on the lineup cause
1. Jackie was sick and didnt even do one song of his own, and kept leaving the stage.
2. Trey stood in and provided some melodic solos.

All that withstanding, that Glens Falls show was the greatest Phil show Ive ever been to and maybe that Ive ever listened to. Definitely the highlight of the tour. Pretty much no Jackie, limited Campbell and friggin Trey Anastasio.

But Larry Campbell isnt near the guitarist of Herring or Haynes. Boring. Ive said it before but Id like to see him try to solo to something like Crazy Fingers just to see how he would fare if he was forced out of his comfort zone of pentatonic blues licks. Ive heard some shows with just him as the main player and his solos are just not interesting.

And for one reason or another I got kind of irked that Jackie Greene travels and plays with a Jerry doll around. First off its a Koons product . . . need I say anymore? And he is playing with Phil, who knew and loved Jerry as a brother for the good part of his adult life. Seems almost like he is just trying too damn hard to fit in.

As for the revolving door policy, I agree that it hurts consistency. He really should stick with a lineup and gain some sort of cohesion.

And that line-up should be:

Phil
Molo
Trey
Campbell
Molitz or Baracco (or Hornsby! mmmm....)

I inculde Campbell in there because he's a good match w/ Trey, they play off each other really well, and the kicker for me is his versatility on so many instruments, I think it adds a nice touch on a lot of songs and opens it up more for the rest of the band. I suppose you could do without him, but I think it'd be too much of one thing after a while. He's a very good guitar player, despite some of the negative comments, and I do think he adds a lot to the band, and I think he makes Trey better when playing with Phil. Trey relies on Campbell more than I think most think he does, and I think that allows Trey to feel more comfortable and go off a little more. Just my 2 cents.

When I saw them in Vegas last year, it was incredible, both shows......but especially the late night show. One of the best I've ever seen. Trey & Phil together are quite a powerful dynamic, and you can tell Molo defintely likes jamming w/ Trey. He just has that rock n' roll sense about him that drives the band into that place. Warren also has that, but in a different sense. Herring most certainly does NOT. But neither are going to be playing w/ Phil anytime soon, so Trey it is. And if you call that "settling", well....

I totaly agree that Phil should pick a band and go with it. The rotating lineup is getting played out. Im sure if this lineup toured a few times they would rip it up just fine.

Just listend to the glens falls show and it was pretty damn good. They sound WAY better with trey.
Still didn't sound anythign liek the phil and friends I remember.
I remeber going to phil shows and just being like holy shit, these guys are sick. Herring and Haynes together was just an insane combo.
Now it just doesn't have that same feel.

That lineup was together for several years but I remember seeing the 10 nite beacon theatre run in '01 a few months after 9/11. That was within a few months of that lineup being formed if im not mistaken. And it was some of the best jamming I can remember.
SO I dont think it is time, I think this lineup is just not worthy. And it is pretty obvious who the weak links are.

I saw dso on friday and phil on sunday. It of been cool to catch ratdog on saturday! if they were playing and anywhere near me.

First time I saw dso and they appeared to be doing an early to mid 70's thing. I was impressed. They were very good and I had a blast.

Phil is the man. Damn he's good. Him and molo carry that band. I'd have to agree with most sentiment here that larry campbell is a bit out of his element with some of the more major scale oriented melodic numbers. But he rocked cumberland, in his own way. jackie greene is very, um green. Most numbers he's reading off sheets.

In some ways his simple playin is a bit more melodic and 'passionate' than campbells.

I guess this is what phil want's. He can have virtually anyone he wants and this is what he's put together. It's strange for anyone going who wants to hear - well you know what I mean.

I guess that's not what phils going for.
