I'm going to be moving down there in a matter of weeks, could really use some advice and tips from some locals. Plus, I've been living where there are no heads for 9 years now, hoping that there is a bit more going on down there.

I am from there but currently in staunton va. If your looking for some "kind" places I recommend cary st. cafe'. If you need directions just ask. Are you moving downtown. Not really a heady town but there are some about. There is a cool music store called plan nine downtown as well. Hardcore music is really big in richmond and watch out for kids on unicycles they'll kick your ass if your drunk. (straight edge gangs) If you need any other info just let me know. I know the area well and my folks live there.

Check this place out when you move there.

I have to go to Richmond about once a month for work and have met some cool people and seen some good tunes there.

Thanks for the replies, fellas. That Cary Street Cafe loks pretty good, loving the vegetarian friendly menu and beer selection especially!

Marauding straiht edge gangs on unicycles? It would almost be worth getting my ass kicked just to see that. They'd be in for a surprise with me, though; I have a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and stay in training. Thanks for all the ggod advice.

i hear richmond is a huge heady town... more so than southern california anyway.... :?

There are heads around that is for sure but I would not call it a huge heady town. It's a strange sorta city. We have a really high violent crime rate and a lot of collage kids which is wierd. I think we had the highest murder per capita in the us in 2000 but other places are rich starbucks/nordstrom areas. There are a lot of really cool bars. Capital ale house has like 160 beers on tap. They have a 25 page beer book!!!! We are with in driving distance to a lot of cool places. The Norva which is in norfolk is a great place to see a show.

Yeah a lot of hardcore and straight edge gangs are in the city. They like to put up lame graffitti and beat people for smoking cigs and drinking. Most of the local musicians are hardcore or punk, but there is a decent jam scene.

i'm not in king sol marbles.. i posted that they were playn there last week... probably caused confusion..
yes, cary st cafe, is a great place to see music.. also a new one toads ( though i hear hanson is playn there.. maybe they're old enough that they don't need a backup band  )
but, yea, i'll PM ya and please feel free to ask questions..
lots to do here... and staunton, we should get together and play.. one thing i don't find around here is anyone who likes to play dead.. i kid you not i live accross the street from what me one of the better sets of guys who can play turning japanese and 8675309 and jenny jenny, but the closest i can get a lot of pals to come to the dead are beatles and floyd stuff the dead play... so let's jam, staunton..
meanwhile, we have lots of cool stuff... a whole street deadicated to the leaders of the lost effort, the civil war.. the statues are positioned, they say, so you can tell whether the rider and or his ride fell in battle.. apparently facing north and your horse with one foot off the ground means ya' both bought it.. and oreo cookies and dc, the mountains ( on the way to staunton ) and the beach all with 100 miles..

my son is in film school.. last halloween he saw em riding naked
and lets not forget we got our own real biker crowd ( now officially disbanded ) who can give em a run for their money
on the heady front, in pockets.. but the best site i have ever seen is a photo take around 1885-1890 of guys in conf uniform playing checkers and drinking dickel whiskey, i think, in front of the old confederate vets home.. very much a maddog wine looking group of guys.. half obscuring the sign? a 7 foot tall, budding, weed plant.. hmmm... makes ya wonder about just WHAT tobacco they were fighting for the rights to have.. :D
