I'm a big fan of Southern Utah myself. Zion and Bryce canyon, Moab with Arches National. North rim of Grand canyon, Arizona's Monument Valley where the filmed a lot of old westerns.That time of the year is iffy with the weather though.

Another vote for Southern Utah, bryce canyon, lake powell, and mushroom valley are not to be missed. Here is the deal with the weather. It can be 70 and sunny during the day and all you need is a tee shirt and shorts but will get very cold at night. If a front comes through and they get dumped on then head to northern utah and ski the powder, you will not find any better. I go out often in March/April as I can ski powder in the morning and golf in the afternoon. If you don't ski then you probably wouldn't be as happy to see 2 feet of fresh powder as I would. Just check the weather in advance and adjust your plans to fit the weather.

as a nyc boy myself i took a trip to calif. back in 79 and never left...i go back to nyc once a year to visit family and friends...sometimes i really miss the energy of a city...fortunatly for me San Fran is only about 100 miles from where i live...I reccomend YOSMITE...Lake Tahoe...but first and foremost the ancient redwoods up on the northern Calif coast...2000 yr.old trees that are uo to 300 ft tall!!...will literally take your breath away...Tahoe and Yosemite can be a bit touristy,but late march proably not...The redwoods on the other hand is never crowded any time of the year..Go figure...you can lost in your own grove..some groves actually meet the pacific ocean...FAAAAAR OUUUUUT!!!...Happy Trails

you don't have to go all the way to the redwood forest park to see huge trees. the john muir recreational area is about 30 minutes north of san francisco and i believe has the tallest tree in the world. well, at least of the ones they'll direct you to as they often want to truly protect the special trees. the giant grizzly at yosemite is straight out of a keebler elf commercial.

interesting side note. john muir went to school where i go, uw-madison and also studied in my hometown of prairie du chien on the mississippi

Hey I've heard Utah is beautiful but if you go be careful. I've got two friends who got busted there. One of them actually had stuff planted on him because the cops wanted the $10k in cash he had, luckily he eventually won the money back but those mormons are a bunch of fascists man. I personally would recommend the redwoods. Great camping and good people all around, can't say I've ever felt threatened by a Cally cop.
