Whew - wow...

Well, Don't kill this thread. We've all invested a bit of caring into Gumbo's situation and I for one would like to know how it all turns out.

Keep this channel open Gumbo. Those that are squabbling all mean well in the end and I'm sure that we're all big enough to get past these petty kind of things.

Just wondering if any of the responders are parents?
Just curious!

I am the parent of an 8 year old girl and a 4 year old boy.

I am also very close to my 18 year old nephew who spends a good deal of weekends with my family. He smokes and plays guitar but he is also a responsible kid who just entered his first year of college.

I have 3, divorced, and I have custody. They are 17 (just started college), 15 and 7.

This question leads me to think - that those who have advised to continue smoking pot and to ignore the advice that's been given... would you give that same advice to your own kids if they were in Gumbo's shoes - probably not I'd imagine. You'd want to at least try to show them the easy way through the mess of life wouldn't you?

If you think I'm ignorant for pointing that out then all I have to say to you is.. lol

you really need to take a chill pill maybe smoke some weed..
Firstly, no matter how high I was, I'd still think you were ignorant. Me smoking pot is not the solution to your ignorance.

Your claimed "point" wasn't made in your first post. Your insult was a mere, "ok nancy reagan". A chill pill won't make your posts merge into a single post with your point made.

What's wrong with just say no? Firstly, how old are you? Do you remember the over indulgences of the 80s? Do you have any clue how much coke was going around? As far as I can tell the popularity of coke has taken a huge downfall since the 80s. Was the campaign the reason?! Can't say. Was it a good start with something different, yes. Most programs and compaigns were written in a pamphlet or book this was simple and to the point to meet the attention span of the intended audience. Brilliant I say!

I don't advocate against drugs to the masses but I 100% advocate against drugs/alcohol to anyone whose life is in a state of dissarray or if they are deeply troubled or struggling with mental challenges.

BTW, I'm not on any soapbox here. In the future you can keep your sly points directed at me in a reply to me.

A 3.0 average may be on a 5.0 scale or may be by taking classes at levels beneath him or maybe a person is cheating. A GPA almost means nothing and only a sucker is impressed with it based on the number alone.

Weed is not the source of his problems but it could ruin his life. But you may not think that a possible expulsion from school & possible criminal record would ruin his life til he straightened it out?!
seems like it's not gumbo who needs the therapy... you got probs bud.
how's giving advice a problem?!?!
the mans concerned about another member and offered him some help. if you dont agree with strummins advice thats cool, but that doesnt mean you should personally attack him.

lol no point in beating a dead horse.. I'm not the one who started throwing words like ignorant out first. I defended someone who I felt was getting kicked while he was down from all sides and a good dose of overreaction from a few. he expressed his appreciation and respect to me in pm and that's all that matters.

myoung6923 - I would be straight with my kids and give them all the information they need to make the right decision for themselves.
I would not preach and I would not lie to them or hand them bs propoganda etc..
If I really saw a serious problem then I would take further steps but imo this was just a fuckup more than anything else.

tbh I can't think of any great "straight" musicians and jerry himself said he would have never been the person he was without getting turned on to teh mary jane.
The list of great straight musicians is so long that I am not even going start to list them.
I'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you.. but I would love to hear who some of these great "straight" musicians are in another thread perhaps. Keep in mind they can't have been a drinker either that counts as drug imo.

Wow, gone for a week and I come back to this waiting under the Christmas Tree? Hmmm.

Well Gumbo, my advice: don't worry. Seriously. You didn't get caught smoking weed, they have no evidence on you (though posting that you did such on a board isn't wise....you never know who's looking on here, just saying), and bringing a Leatherman to school can't be THAT great of an offense, can it? It surprises even me that you'd get suspended for anything more than a day for something like that. It's good you called your Admin to apologize - that was a great move, and being sincere, which it sounds like you were, will go a long way.

I got expelled from my high school (a private catholic school which my parents went in debt shelling out about $20k for) a week before Christmas vacation of my senior year. That sucked. But I wouldn't go back and change anything because of what I've learned from it. I got suspended from that catholic school more times than I can count on 2 hands for various reasons (goofing around, causing trouble, and other stuff), so when I got expelled for getting in this big fight with the principal, well....telling him to kiss my ass was kind of the straw that broke the camels back. Anyways, I've got some experience of being in trouble, sort of like you are right now. I turned out pretty alright, I think, and not saying we're the same or anything, but things happen, and you learn from them. Be a good citizen, don't hurt people, including yourself, and chances are you'll be ok.

Your situation may seem big and scary now, but I'm looking at it and not really seeing the big deal (no offense to you, just the situation). I think you're gonna be fine. Some thoughts:

- never admit to anything unless they can prove it and have evidence against you. As someone else here said, they'll just try to scare you into admiting something, and then you're fucked if you do. And like someone else said: grovel. Apologize up the ass (and mean it) for your mistake of bringing in the leatherman, and explain why you still had it: you went camping, still had it in your bag, had no idea. Sounds like you have a good track record both in the community (not getting into trouble) and in school (grades, and again not getting into too much trouble), so it shouldn't be a big deal.

- the leatherman thing should blow over. So maybe you get suspended. So what. Happens all the time to kids in high school, and it won't ruin your future or chance you getting into college. Do something good in your free time off: volunteer at a soup kitchen, help out underprivlaged kids, etc. It'll go a long way for your credentials. You can turn the whole thing into a really positive experience. It was a leatherman for christ's sake, and it was an honest mistake. You can tell that to any college folks who question you about it, and if they don't like it, well tell them to fuck off and you don't need their snobby ass college anyways. There's a thousand colleges out there, you're bound to get into a few. Stand up for yourself, and have some fucking confidence in yourself. Sounds like you are a good kid. Stay that way and don't get involved with the really fucked up ones.

- lots of opinions on here, but I don't think you need to go drastically changing your life because of this (ie - quitting smoking or whatever else). Unless YOU want to and feel you NEED to because it's screwing up your life. To an extent, I think Dre was right in some things getting overblown, and had a lot of good advice too, and I think Strummin's and others' suggestions were a little over the top, but all in good faith. I think he's only really telling you to do what YOU feel is right for your life going forward, and I think you already know what that is, even if you don't think you do. Deep down, you gotta trust your gut and do what is right for you. I don't think you'll have a problem doing that.

Hey, you've gotten this far on something, whatever it is that you've got, and you're not out there swinging crack to kids on the corner, or robbing people to get by (I hope not anyways), or any other toolshed-hoodlum things you could be doing, so I say whatever you're doing, keep doing it. You made a mistake. Happens. To everyone. Learn from it, make sure not to bring shit to school that you shouldn't, and if you're gonna get high at or during school, well....don't foget the Visine and some Axe or body spray or something, and roll a joint so you don't have any "evidence" left over. I neither condem nor condone it, just saying, if you're gonna do it, be smart about it.

Good luck man, you'll be fine.

PS:

- what's happening w/ your friend? Did he admit to anything? Did he have anything on him? It can't be all that bad for him....getting caught smoking weed isn't doesn't call for capital punishment or anything close. Sorry, you may have already covered this, but after reading all these posts, I've forgotten.

I would give you advice but everybody on here would get pissed as hell at me, I have quite the history of being the rebellious one, but guess what, I am 42 years old, have 300 plus Dead Shows under my belt, have done enough bongs to keep us all high for weeks on end, I play music in a very disfunctional band of misfits, and I own a beautiful home in the mountains of Colorado where I get to call Billy Nershi, Jeff Austin, and Vince Herman neighbors, I think I turned out pretty damn good !!!!!

we definitely are a "do as I say, not as i did.." bunch..lol

Obviously a few of us here have had some serious problems w/serious drugs. Going through that and coming out the other end does tend to turn one a bit preach"y"..lol

Fear not you committed no crime (at least none that they can prove) a leatherman while banned in school can not be charged as a crime at a DA/state level. Nothing more than a scare tactic, they have nothing.

keep your head up!

It is all about getting your priorities in order ... I smoked myslef silly thru high school, college, and this morning for breakfast, I saw the Dead in the 80's over 300 times, I still go to alot of live shows and festivals ... BUT before I do I handle my business, work before play.... I made it a point to never miss class, paid attention, did my homework, then I played, but never first ... you will be amazed how much fun you can have when you take care of your business first, then you can rage guilt free !!!!!!!!!
