What does everyone think of Jerry's acoustic playing? Certainly those last years with Grisman produced some great music.

I really like the subtle touch he had and the way he would solo.

anybody own the acoustic jerry album "lonesome prison blues"? Its damned good and from what I know I think its from one of the reconstruction tours with just jerry and john kahn in the early eighties. It'll probably be a bitch finding it so if you see it, get it

the pizza tapes were incredable, three musical giants, garcia, grisman, and rice all jammin on full gear, jerry did some great acousitc, although i still prefer his electric, jerry certainly is a great guitarist on any level. jerry was also the best banjo player i've ever heard,(though i havnt heard much) but still, i can't imagine much better banjo playing than what he did on the "old and in the way" albums.

I think Santa, I mean Jerry, really stood out on electric and acoustic because of his acoustic background.

In a few articles he talks about not doing alot of hammer and pull-offs but instead playing each note like he means it. Well, that right there is where too many guitarists lose it on acoustic - but not Jerry.

I saw a video of him with David Grisman called just "Grateful Dawg" at Blockbuster of all places. Anyone seen it? Is it any good?

Yes, it is brilliant. Well worth buying and features some great footage and interviews. It's quite sad too.

I always tell people about Midnight Getaway off Run For The Roses or play to them and then ask - "who else could play like that on an acoustic guitar?"

I also think that in many respects he out-performs Rice on the Pizza Tapes, though clearly Rice was kicking back and enjoying the ride. Rice is clearly more of the speed demon, tone perfect technical master of flatpicking acoustic guitar. But I think Jerry was alot more melodic as a player, his fills were on the button every time, his solo's had more depth and feel.

Thats the show ebick, probably my favorite version of run for the roses and friend of the devil. Another great acoustic album is the "wooden set" Its a dead album and it comes from 1970. I can't remember the date but its excellent and the live friend of the devil from the golden road appears on it.
