Just wondering, does anyone consider Phil and Friends and Ratdog just coverbands?

When they are playing GD material, no.
When their sets are filled with covers, yes.
But then again I consider some JGB shows coverbandesque.
Hell, most Legion of Mary shows were all covers.

I'd say they are the fruit of the Dead. You know, I really think that if Jerry and the boys were still playing, they'd be different from the Dead in the early 90s. They'd morph for sure. Anyhow, I love Ratdog and Phil. In fact, I just scored my tix for Phil at the Phillmore in Denver on 9/28! Any Coolorado folks gonna be there? Lostsailor? Jck_Strw? PHPBB? I am particularly happy that I will be seeing a band play to me after the schedule we've had this year!!! Yippee for me!

I am afraid I got jaded ... I absolutely love Phil and he will ALWAYS be my favorite bass player, but I listened to the Loose Lucy opener from a recent Phil show and they sounded like the Black Crows to me and no matter how good the Black Crows may actually be I am not spending 50 bucks to see them ...

Yeah, I am hoping for a good show. I didn't realise that Jackie Greene had such a twangy southern voice. Please let me be wrong, but it doesn't go well with the PL&F sound. I'll write a review afterwards and let everyone know my thoughts on it. Maybe Phil will head next door to Dulcineas afterwards as he did after his last Phillmore show. THAT would make it all worth it.

I wouldn't call them cover bands, really. They were in on the songs. They are their songs. But I guess I can see why they can be considered a cover band.

not at all .. they've both written original music post-dead and you're not a cover band when you're playing music that your old band wrote

also, Ratdog puts new spins on old tunes all the time.. I love how they extend little parts in between verses i.e. Loose Lucy
