This is more for a question for those of you who were touring or saw the Dead in the early-to-mid-80's.
I was just watching that Althea vid that someone posted on another thread. It's from early '81, and Jerry still hasn't gotten big yet, so I started wondering, at what point was it that really he started to pork out to the point where his weight became a health issue? I'm guessing between '82 and '86, but do you guys specifically remember watching him get bigger over the years? And when was the point where you said "wow, Papa Bear's gotten pretty fat since last tour, what's up with that?"
I mean, gradually from the 60's to the 80's he filled out with age (as most of us do), but the point from that to the point where his weight was an issue was really a fast transition and probably facilitated his health issues to the point where he fell into the coma.
I was always impressed how Bob, Phil, Mickey & Billy were able to keep their shape through their careers, being on the road and all. Bob has put on some weight nowadays, but he's getting older, so it's sort of expected, and it's not even that much. But Phil is skinnier than ever, most likely due to his operation/disease and subsequent health status & having to keep keep in fair health, etc.
