I actually ran into Bill on several occasions. Once, I was accidentally dosed at Oakland Coliseum and was downstairs in the bowels of the place when I had to go to the bathroom. I'm standing in the queue behind this 7 foot tall redhead that can only be Bill. We chatted, peed, and walked off.
Another time, I was coming down in this elevator across from the same coliseum after a show, about midnight, and Bill's in the elevator w/his bicycle! I was too high to talk to him, but the next night I run into him at the show and ask: "Bill, I know you're tough and all, but where you really going for a bike ride around Oaktown at midnight?!?"
He giggles, and says: "Nah, the hotel found out I had the bike in the room and offered to lock it up downstairs for me, so I was just bringing it down!" I told him I was glad, because we didn't want to lose him.
He was always genial, loved the boys, brought numerous b-ball stars to shows (Scotty Pippen, Larry Bird, etc.) and always tried to push the Dead into whatever he was saying. He was even in Egypt with the boys. A great guy.
