I remember a Phish t-shirt in a music store with a Dr.Seuss motif that had colored fishes, one fish, two fish.... and somehow it resolved to say something about new DEAD with the last fish. I don't recall for sure how it went but it gave me the impression that Phish were the new Dead. It was a turn off for me. It was years later that I finally bought 'Billy Breathes'. That's a pretty good album.

heh, This topic always remind me of a episode of my name is earl. Where one of the characters make two batches of brownies or (special) and the other isn't special, so Earl and his brother switch the signs and everyone who wanted the special once didn't get the special ingredient. After they find out one of the customer's is like "hey I just listend to a entire phish album and I wasn't stoned, you know how that makes me feel, are you going to give me that hour of my life back"

I like 'em when theyre just jamming. its when they start playing vaccum cleaners and jumping on trampolines, man thats sideshow crap. I could never take them seriously after knowing that lol

man i was so pissed when i saw fishman playing it. I wanted to drag my mother in and go LOOK!
HE'S GETTING PAID TO DO IT. I used to love to play mine. I am so jealous. I know a lot more phish tunes than I realize. a lot more. they are not in my top 10 either

Haji, I agree with both your comments, 1) Live Phish is some of the dopest jams on the scene, where as their studio albums do them little justice, and 2) Trey has a wonderful guitar tone, absolutely phenominal.

So I'd say you and I are on the same boat!

Anyone seen the Phil and Trey show? I saw them at Vegoose last year for the late show and it was one of the best shows I have seen in recent times. Except for the Cheese show the next night. Ohhhh that was heavenly. But there was one particularly annoying thing about the Phil and Trey show where Trey was soloign on the eleven and Phil wanted to go back into the verse but Trey wouldn't do it and he acted like Phil wasn't even on the stage with him. Phil kept looking over in disbelief that Trey wouldn't even look at him. So finnally Phil walked over to him and Trey just kept jamming. He practically turned away from him! Where I come from, nobody, and I mean nobody turns away from Phil. And it reminded me why I have always felt a disconnect with Trey. Yes, he is a guitar God but I always get the sense that he is not playing for the crowd but rather more for himself. I don't know maybe I'm imagining things but the Phil and Trey conflict gave me creepy vibes. I was sure that Phil wasn't going to even come out for the second set. But he did because he is a consumate professional and the second set was amazing with one of the best versions of Wharf Rat that I think I have ever heard. Trey sang it and it was like, wow, Wharf Rat can sound like that? Trey's tone is pure sickness. Too bad he is such a creepy bastard.

I was at both Vegoose shows and I thought they rocked. The late night was one of the best shows I've ever seen - top 5 for sure. AMAZING MUSIC being made that night. And let me play a litlte devil's advocate here: I don't recall Phil walking over to Trey, so can't comment on it, but just because Phil wants to come back to something doesn't mean Trey has to, though I'm not saying either way whether or not this is good for the band at the time. What I'm saying is it was billed as "Phil & Trey", not "Phil & Friends", but even so, everyone is in the band who is on stage, and so if someone is feeling something and trying to really get to a new space musically, would you want someone coming over and saying "hey, wrap it up, let's go" to you? Let's say Trey was really feeling it, and who knows...maybe Molo and Medeski were too, and maybe Phil wasn't....or was Trey on some lone journey where everyone else was on the same page and he was the one that needed to come back to earth? Lots of different options. Kind of a cloudy subject, I guess.

Last year I even went out and bought their live in brooklyn cd to ry and understand but it really did not do all that much for me.

I havent listened the brooklyn cd, but 2004 definately isn't the best year of phish IMHO. '93 -'97 phish is filthy delicious though.

On the topic of Phish with horns, you gotta' dig the horn outro on the Gumbo from "A Live One". That is awesome in my opinion, as is the whole album for any of you who haven't heard it. Half and hour of Tweezer absolutely kills, and Stash is always amazing.
