I was worried about this but I just heard a 'Brown-eyed Women' from 8/21/'72 and it could have been a twin to the Europe 72 version, just as tight with the opening riffs, the harmonies and the solo. I'll take dem warts!

I have to say that the GD Movie Soundtrack has some of my favorite versions of a lot of their stuff, and I'm pretty sure that they did a lot of overdubs on that one. doh!

I think, as oher had said, most of the overdubs were on the vocals. On no other show from 72 do they hit the harmonies like they do during Ramble On Rose, Cumberland and TJed on E72. In a way it is kind of a shame because there is some fine playing on the record.

The fact that Donna is lowered in the mix isn't the same as overdubbing. Multi-track live recordings obviously have to be mixed after the fact to be released on disc (or vinyl as it were at the time). Mixing something to sound good (even perhaps better than it did to the audience) is normal, and it's still using the original performances that were recorded live in one take. Overdubbing is different. The Dead were known especially at that time for botched harmonies and rough vocals. They probably wouldn't have released the album commercially like that, especially considering their tight vocal parts on American Beauty and Workingman's Dead. The shorter instrumental parts wouldn't be the result of overdubbing. They would be the result of editing down longer parts (cutting sections out). Unless the band actually played shorter parts live on those performances (which seems more likely).
