the spider series only seem to work well ultra clean or overly distorted

i have the pod xt .. i think the pc interface is super cool.. download lessons yo would otherwise buy.. wolfe marshall and so on, some even by the artist.. for ex. roger waters does some.. there are one say six g dead ones, but truckn franklins tower sugaree casey jones to name a few..
the ability to learn new effects and how they work and amps too is something i have not seen elsewhere. they really help tp see an mxr distortion and be able to adjust the knobs , for example.. and the scrolling tabs and the lessons being broken up tabs and audio like a lesson beats a cd / book combo cause it's visual and it has the effects and amps combo...no way would i have understood this without something like that..
as to the instruments.. i see folks with em and the one thing about dropping all that change when you can maybe get the real thing? i'd rather have a nice strat or gibson or even gibson knockoff like a, what, lcd? ltd? than have a permanent "virtual" real thing..
the amps look sweet if you are gonna buy to play lotsa stuff but i like the fender double rverb and would rather have that then a a computer parts
lastly line 6 support is the best of any i have ever seen .. it's pretty easy to get a live person in under 10 mins..

Isn't all their stuff solid state ??? Don't they use that overused ad slogan of ... "Get true tube like sounds ..." Um heres an idea get a tube amp !!! I would cancel a gig before I played a solid state amp in front of people !!!!!!!!!! Why is the world trying so hard to emulate tube sound, just get a tube amp !!!!!!!!!!

Weak. I've heard Bobby and Jerry both play solid states and they sounded just like, well, Bobby and Jerry.

Line 6 gear is good for what it is. Good solid state. You will get tones similar to tube but it won't react like tubes nor will it have the feel.

But, when recording, that matters less.

I guess it is just a matter of taste, If I play a solid state I need all kinds of tone processing , I play a Strat straight into a Fender Blues and with nothing but me and my volume and tone controls I can get a huge variety of tones, nice crisp clean tones ... solid state has always sounded hollow and tinny to me ... the one thing with a tube amp is this however, you can't go into a small venue with a bunch of watts , cause I get my tone by turning up and having the ability to push the tubes with my pickups .... okay I will admit, tone processing outside of Strats and tubes confuses me and I always end of with crap .... we all do what we do

It's not about taste it's about narcissism. If your
Fender broke down and a bandmate gave you a solid state amp to use that night you'd cancel the show without regard to your bandmates, the venue, the people that were coming out to see you, etc...

Tone is also in the hands and the mind...

I don't think he meant he'd actually cancel the gig, I think it was more of making a point. But, tone lies not exclusively in the hands and mind, as I know you're aware of, but I think you were also trying to make a point as well and not be so exact.

Ok, my post was officially completely useless. Sorry.

So on the topic of amps, a friend (very very very good guitar player) told me that when I get my hollowbody from Resurrection, I should definitely get a new amp, because having a really nice guitar is somewhat useless without a nice amp to play it through. Now, I was/am planning on getting a new amp anyways (gotta wait till the reserves build themselves back up, though), and I'm sure there's some truth to his statement, but is it really that dramatic?

He has one of those expensive boutique amps, cost him about $2500. But I can't afford that, so I'm torn between trying to find a nice silverface head (ala Jerry, or like you have Nick) with a speaker cab (Hard Truckers maybe???:P) Or going w/ a Fender Twin Reverb ('65 reisse?), though if I went w/ the head/cab combo, I'd probably end up dropping around 2 large anyways....

But I can't figure out what I want to do or what would be the better move . Suggestions?

As far as amps go this could be a long discussion, Benny. Start a new thread or hit me up via email and let me know what you are looking for as far price, tone, tube info (ELs or 6L6s, tube or SS rect), single or dual channel, wattage, fx, etc. I've got tons of ideas.

I've been really impressed with TwoRock as well as Mesa for newer stuff. Not so much the Fenders that are made today.

Cabs are subjective but I am loving my weber neodymium speakers like nobody's business. Wonderful compliment to an old fender.

Nothing beats the smell from the back of a vintage head after the tubes have been emitting their sweet, sweet goodness...

My solid state amp used to be my back-up but now I have more tube amps so that one is my "hey man I need an amp can I borrow one" amp.

My point wasn't to be mean but shocked and concerned about somebody canceling a gig cuz they can't play a tube amp.

That's all.

I'm a complete tube snob some might say. If no pedals are involved I will only play an amp that is tube rectified.

I would only add that line 6 amps are kinda of nice, but I wouldn't use them for gigs, cause all that moving will mess them up and break them, and then you will be left playing someone else's tube amp. I play a les paul thru an older peavey, digital(early nineties) and get compliments all the time on my tone. Remember, music is a launguage, it communicates aspects of our shared life, keep it simple and remember the song is what counts.

As far as reliability ss definately has tube beat.

Check out what the GD did and there progression. They moved on to use solidstate cuz tubes would constantly break down from being on the road.

Let's not fool ourselves here tube amps and tubes can last wonderfully for years but require some care:
- regular maintenance
- regular playing
- thoughtful transportation

The last one always gets people. Please for the sake of you amps travel with them on your backseat not in your trunk the bed of your truck. All that rattling wreaks havoc on the tubes. The seat is totally cushioned and the amps bounces but doesn't get all jarred up.
