WELL I take lessons at a music store in Palo Alto, my guitar teacher told me that on Saturday Phil Lesh stopped in. The only one that recognized him was the one deadhead employee. Apparently Phils daughter goes to Stanford. I thought he only had two sons....? I was at a GUITAR show in MARIN. . Sorry Gods

I live in the south bay and am a definite fan of Gryphon, though haven't been there in a while. It's a toss up between them and Guitar Center ... HA!

Geez, all the hatred for GC, don't know why...

Personally, these days my shopping goes like this:
1 - know what I want and buy it cheap on-line
2 - goto GC and try out everything they have

I'm not too keen on the small shops these days. Most, sadly, seem to have forgotten their only advantage is customer service. The small shops I used to go to now either are disgruntled by GC and Sam or they are acting like elitists. Bah.

When I hit GC or Sam around 3 o'clock in my work clothes (slack and dress shirt) I get great service. In fact better service than I get at small shops.

I live in San Jose, about 20 minutes from Gryphons, 10 minutes from Guitar Center, and my normal haunt, Guitar Showcase.

I avoid the Guitar Center in San Jose. Even in the new location it sucks. but I was in the one in Tucson in May, and in Medford, Oregon in July, and neither one of those was too bad, no wanker cranked up to 110 decibels, showing off his best power chord.

Hey BayAreaBB, Pigpen, you jam? I always like to get together to play.

Pig, not Jack T by any chance? I took a bluegrass class with him a few years ago, and have run into him at jams sometimes. He sure can play, and he gave me one of the best pieces of advice for a jam.
Find the first the note of the song. Once you have that, then you're ready to take a solo. Great ear training, too.

yeah those chubby guys with "skullets" that work at GC can actually hook you up really good if you talk to 'em right. Theyre makin a commision, you can get a bill or two takin off the top, not to mention the electronic tuners, strings and chords they throw in. When GC came to my town they literally opened up next door to our beloved mom and pop guitar shop, a shop with outrageous prices and big hair 80's metal freak employees - just alot of wankery. of course the shop didnt last more than a few months, but GC offered everyone of those boys management positions at GC and everyone of them refused. knowing those guys theyre prolly biffed out on toot somewhere pissin and moanin about it still.

my only beef with GC is the noise inside, 5-10 kids all playing different KnickelCreed and StaindBack songs over each other. The volume knobs just seem to keep getting turned clockwise in an epic battle to see who can out 1 finger drop D barre chord each other. I find bringing this up to the salesman i might be talking too is a great ice-breaker, they love to laugh at that one, even though its a cheap joke.

they see so many "soccer moms" buying "squire packs" that anyone with a bit of advanced knowledge is a warm suprise.
