I can't be the only one here who thinks the first Dick's Pick is the best. Late 73 when things were just getting really, really interesting. Doesn't have teh complete show, just the highlights, which I am sure some have issue with. But it more than suffices.

I still think it is the best, the original, and the best. Like Colonel Sanders.

i agree with tiger, you can't go wrong with 14. 12 and 1 are also quite good

I'm no expert, since I only own 3 of the DP's (vol 1, 6, and 18 ). Of the 3 that I've heard, my favorite is vol. 1.

cow palace 74 dp 24 just a rockin show....highlights are scarlet which is just so killer and happens to be the 1st one played live, short and very very sweet...but the killer here is the playin>UJB>dew>UJB>playin combo only done i think four times this one is great...my fav is 11/17/73 Pauley Pavilion

aw fuck i just wrote a pretty long review and recommendation for DP 19 but i was so stoned that i pressed home after previewing and forgot to submit.

the long and the short of it - simply amazing show. absorbed one long afternoon while tripping with my roommate and we both were amazed at the quality of music we were hearing and the skill with which it was performed.

the long and short of it: set 1 is totally solid. very nice Row Jimmy and a funky TLEO. i got lost during the solo and forgot what song it was, just the most amazing jam ever. i remember it being something like a lotus flower unfolding petal by petal...

set 2 is trippy as anything i've ever heard. china>rider finds jerry and bob connecting on the transition like i've never heard before. it is like the music is perfectly ingrained in both of their heads, like twins separated at birth. playin' is mind-blowing. like a perfectly tuned machine with many different gears meshing seamlessly together.

set 3 the highlight is defintiley dark star>morning dew. spacey yet very melodic dark star with jerry and phil leading the way and expanding the musical landscape in every dimension known to man. then comes morning dew, extremely impassioned jerry on vocals and solo. sugar mags>eyes>stella is a very pretty sequence. and a rockin' johnny b goode to close the evening, especially noting that sweet distorted tone for mr. garcia.

all in all, you can tell the band is going all out starting with the second set. they are giving it their all no doubt. okay well i guess this turned out pretty long anyway. hope it helps with the choice! i highly reccomend it although i'm sure all DP are great recordings.

thanks for the review. i'm getting pretty pumped to give it a listen. should come tomorrow. there's a really great review on amazon that you simplified down very nicely. basically said set one was very solid. no all-time greats, but you could tell the band was very 'into' it that night. it also said the dark star was very melodic. not so atonal as many of the '73-'74 stars got, which was what sold me on buying this picks

D-V-S, 3 makes you more an expert than me! I was listening to radiodead and I was digging this selection that was just titled Boston 12/02/73 jam.
It was great! I came in on the middle of 'Playin'' and then there was a great jam including some Beatlesque chord changes (Dear Prudence?) with Bob owning the walks and fills around the chords and Jerry playing as tight and right of a slide part that I have ever heard him play! Well it went into 'He's Gone', 'Truckin'', etc; and I goggled the date and found out it was DP14, disk 4.

im not sure about the dicks picks, but "rockin the riegn "is awesome. personally i like to go to terrapin on this site, and pick a show at random- either by setlist, year, or rating , crank it up and boogie in my living room[/i][/b]

the solo on the DP 19 Dew is probably the hottest one Ive ever heard, Jerry really tears it up

but yeah DP 14 has probably my favorite PITB ever, that groove they go into in the first minute or so of the jam is just hot, and the proceeding jam goes into so many different moods, the part before the Mind Left Body Jam reallly fucking scared me the first time I heard it, it was epic
