I know this is an odd question, but can any of you heads remember any shows where you heard a dog bark in the background on the recording? Probably an outdoor show...

I remember Bobby's dog Otis wandering around backstage all the time. You can see/hear him on the Reckoning recordings and the associated HBO (or was it Showtime) video of the acoustic sets from Radio City and the Warfield, October 1980. When Otis wanders onstage, Bobby says 'That's Otis' during one of the songs, I think it was Monkey and the Engineer.

Otis was put down during the Chinese New Year Run in 1987. Mickey had a tooth pulled during that run of shows as well. The energy was really weird and the shows were rather lackluster.

wow, quick reply! thanks! I love the reckonings CD but don't recall hearing his dog... but then i've never listened for it. I'll pop that cd in tonight and keep my ears peeled. You are talking about the acoustic cd simply called 'Reckonings'?

Also, thanks for the extra info on the dog.. that is also good stuff for my project!

Kinda off topic but my dog howls along to the studio version of ship of fools.

If anyone wants to pick up a quick and strange read find "conversations with the spirit of jerry garcia" by wendy weir. She mentions somewhere in the book that she leads conversations between bob and otis's "oversoul" still to this day. Bob had a deep connection to that dog and imo if they are going to make a movie about the grateful dead it should be from the point of view of otis.

Bob's new dog, Jackson Hamlet Weir, is barking like crazy on his collaboration song w/ Keller Williams "Cadillac".

Keller listed the dog in the album credits for vocals, and as a result some music websites like AOL Music, MSN Music, and Star Pulse have a Jackson Hamlet Weir "Bob's Dog" artist profile page

I am pretty sure that was just a phil in a druken stuper. Our band use to play that song as a show closer a lot and get the whole bar to howl along. The real challange is to see if you can get them to howl in a clave' and then bring into a not fade away chant

Ahh ya, i need a cut where a dog actually makes a little noise. I'm figuring there has to be an outdoor show or two out there where a dog was hanging a little too close to the tapers..

I did get my hands on 'Da Bird Song', a song from Jerry & Howard Wales off the release 'Hooteroll' where a dog barks at the end... but i'd like to find some live dead too..
