"According to Variety, J2 Entertainment partners Justin Berfield and Jason Felts have acquired rights to two books about Jerry Garcia and the Grateful Dead and intend to make a feature on the rock band's lead singer and guitarist.

The duo, who optioned the Sandy Troy bios "Captain Trips" and "One More Saturday Night," do not fit the prototypical Deadhead profile. Berfield, best known for playing bullying brother Reese in "Malcolm in the Middle," is 19; Felts is 26. Berfield said he was new to the band's music but his father was a devout Deadhead.

The movie will revolve around Garcia's recovery from a drug-induced coma. Garcia's drug problem had pushed ex-wife Carolyn away from the musician, but she returned to nurse him back to health. Garcia had to relearn to play the guitar, but eventually rebounded and led the band to its biggest success"

This has always been my concern when they talk about doing a dead movie. Much like Ray, I think the only thing that really sells is musicians crashing and burning on drugs and then sorta getting their shit together for a feel-good ending.

I have a little bit of trouble thinking they can really capture the depth of what Garcia was going through. I feel like a bunch of people who might not know that much about him will just be reaffirmed in their (wrong) notions that Garcia was just a junkie.

Granted, these are fears, and hopefully the movie will be done well. Like people have said b4, we all carry it inside us, and don't a movie to tell us about the dead.

If you read early in this post this was MY idea for a great grateful dead movie. (well THE GRATEFUL DEAD movie is better) I personaly find this moment in their lives as the most suitable for a full featured film. I hope they do flash backs while he is in a coma to explain the early 60's how they got together and the powerful artistic discovery going on in the bay area in the mid sixties. I hope they show the downfall. The stress of the record label, supporting such a large overhead, the wives, the fact that the drug experimentation that brought them so close together was now isolating them all from each other and each other from the music. That is the kind of conflict that a movie like this HAS to have. A movie is boring if there is no conflict and this is the most conflicted time in the dead history (lenny hart, 94 and 95 tour give it a run for it's money) Not to mention how great of an ending is the truimphant return to the stage rockin the house and putting tears in the eyes of all the fans with the most heartfelt and powerful touch of gray ever played. I should have wrote this screen play years ago, then I could actually be able to pay my bills.

You know I heard about this a long while back, and shrugged it off.... Oh god, that would be a HORRIBLE movie. I would rant and fucking scream at the tv every time the commercial would come on... Like I normally do when someone generalizes the Dead (I love the 70s... Bastards) Eh I dont know

Im just kind of expecting that Johnny Cash movie, not only the fake fans but the whole movie being pretty much about his drug use. And once again, I dont think ANYONE can play Jerry.

I agree, and not only for his physical aspect. Jerry doesn't fit the standard 'rock star' stereotype. Thinking about it, I can't imagine who could play his part in a Grateful Dead movie without being a major fiasco.
