You should get it just to have it. They paced themselves that night because it was going to be a long haul. Nothing intense but good playing. Jerry looks so high playing Scarlet and does a real sweet lead in Friend of the Devil. I couldn't get tickets for that night but saw the whole show on PBS and FM stereo broadcast.

Mixed feelings about the Closing of Winterland. The dvd is nice and it documents things very well with some priceless footage and interviews.

Music is pretty solid, nothing too special in my opinion. But the event brings it higher.

Django Best Stagger Lee ive ever heard, solo-wise that is, goes to 10/20/78. I have it tabbed if anyone wants it.

Get One from the vault. It is one of my favorite shows. Very laid back one moment and then ripping it up the next. Jerry is in peak form. One hundred year haul is to similar to Europe '72. Good show(s) but not much new on it. Closing of the Winterland is a good show but don't buy the CD because one day you will want to get the DVD. It is buy far the best DVD the dead have released (imo).

Check out the Grateful Dead Movie dvd too. Well worth the price for some classic footage.

the dead always said that the new years shows were like the super bowl, all hype and the game never lived up to it. I thought the scarlet-fire was pretty standard (mentioned above jerry is trippin his balls off) however really good st stephen, good lovin, terrapin, and j.b goode , i think a lot of people like it because if you didnt see them back in the late 70's this your most quality footage and complete concert footage, but i would obviously get it. Downhill From Here i feel is their best dvd.

Here's what I've gotten from this. a)I have always wanted 'Hundred Year', favorite era for sound and personal. Someday daddy's goin' buy that fer hisself! b)I am not a huge fan of DVDs of concerts. c)I know I would grow to really like the 'Winterland' - added repertoire. d)I initial asked because I want to get one of my kids (adult) a killer live Dead CD. I have given her some tapes. e) The more I think about it 'One From the Vault' sounds like the best bet.

Browsing the internet I came across this 'New Years Eves at Winterland - 2003' CD. I searched but found no references regarding the disc. What is this about? Is this an official release?

Ya, it was a bonus disc they sent out for a pre-order of that "Closing of Winterland" release. (at least I think it was that release. I know I recieved my bonus disc, just fuzzy on what release it actually was included with.

That's a GREAT bonus disc. Makes pre-ordering worth it. I had a cassette tape of the 12/31/77 shows long ago and wore it out.
