EDIT: But that Spectrum show you speak of I think was 12/29/96, no? That "rotation" jam you speak of wasn't something they did on a regular basis, it was kind of a goof thing, so to comment to yourself "is this what's left?" is kind of not the point, you know? No, it was mos def not what it had come to. I dunno, as a fan of them, it might not be the sickest jam, or version of a song, or even something you wanted to hear, but consider the fact that you got to see a rare and unusual event in Phish history, fwiw.

Yeah, I know. It was neat. I dig stuff like that, It was cool for the first 10 minutes, but it was really long and it was kinda like, well thanks for wasting a good part of the show, wanna play the rototoms while your at it Trey?

But thats not really what I meant about "this being it". It was the whole scene. I was in my mid twenties and felt old in the crowd and just really melancholy over Jerry. I saw lots of Phish shows before and since, but it really was the beginning of the slide for me with Phish. I do have to say that the last Camden show before Coventry was really good.

And I get what Viceroy is saying about Trey being a nobody. In a very grand sense, its part of why he is being such a tool lately. He wants to be his own name. Not a part of Phish. But he isnt. Ask anyone, your grandma, anyone, who Jerry Garcia is and instantly they have an image of shaggy ol Capt Trips. He is an Icon.
Trey is not. Your grandma and 99% of the population have no idea who he is. Some people not into our scene may know about Phish, but they invariably say, "Arent they that band thats like the Grateful Dead?"

they are both incredible musicians I will sat that from a musician point of view that trey has the techniqu, but none of that matters if you don;t have soul. I go with Jerry cuz the aft man rocks!

Clapton is crisp, neat and very clinical. But he lacks that edge that Jerry had, that slippery unpredictable edge. Okay I'll say it - he has no where near the soul Garcia had. No one could improvise like Jer and Jer was far more original in his tone and soloing than Eric. You know where the next note is coming in every Clapton solo, he sticks strictly to that same scale. But yes he's still brilliant at it.

And I cannot stand him for sticking with that strat for so long, he plays those Cream shows in 05 and hasn't got the balls to get out the Gibson!

Guitar Player, in honor of it's 40th year is doing top 40 lists. Weir made the top 40 rhythym guitarists, Garcia did not make the top 40 'Melodic' guitarists. Now maybe it's that melodic tag that disqualifies him, Uli Jon Roth and Joe Satriani (or is it Steve Vai) are on it. I always thought that the 'melody' was under Jerry's solos, maybe that's 'lyricism' at the heart of his solos. Can someone set me straight here.

Well, I was just here grabbing tabs and thought I had to put my 2 cents worth. I've seen Jerry and Trey both, although my first Dead show was 92 (Deer creek)and my first Phish show was 94 (IU auditorium). So, I caught Jerry at the end of his career and Trey/Phish I've seen a lot. To be honest if Jerry was still with us I'm sure he and Trey would have shared a stage by now. They are both unreal players and both possess unique styles that are very difficuly to emulate. I'm not sure anyone can play live the technical compositions that Trey used to pull off on a nightly basis. Just like Trey can't lay down the smooth love like Jerry. Together they would have been the greatest!!! Phish took me a while to really like their music but take a listen to some of their mid to late 90's shows and you'll hear the magic.

Jerry was Trey's biggest musical influence, so to be fair we should all like them both. Oh and to set the record straight, I never saw 20,000 dead fans throw down like Phishheads did at some of the funk-fest shows that I witnessed in 97/98. Take a listen to Denver 97, the Johnny B. Goode rips up most versions of the Dead doing it. To say Trey cant move you, well then you better try listening to classical or some other music because rock and roll ain't for you man. I just think a lot of people hear a few Phish songs or one show and think they can judge the band's whole career and this just is not the case. Jerry had nights where he could not sing, Bobby had to do it for him. Everyone has highs and lows.

Jerry, Trey hangs on them sustained notes too often too long, i have a '99 Phil n friends show with Trey, Kimock, Gordon, Phil, and Donna. i think Billy was on drums also, ill have to check. But they do a Help>Slip>Frank, and well Treys voice is just emotionless, just flat plain, no emphasis or real feeling to it. i stopped listening to the show, i just keep it in my collection
