Wake of the Flood. 'Stella Blue'. Need I say more. Ok, Phil's rideout at the end of 'Eyes', the powerful group vocals on 'Sunshine', the cool harmonica on 'Let it grow'; and then Jerry's climbing solo, 'Row Jimmy' (tears in my eyes), and then the Rick Griffith cover painting and Crow graphic on the label, a darker, earthier vibe of art work than I was used to for the Dead.

I know they mixed live tracks with studio tracks for this album but I still think this counts. Anthem of the sun. I use to put that in my record player to go to sleep to in highschool. I had to stop becuase I wasn't getting enough sleep. also think mars hotel doesn't get it's just due. In reality I like all of them with the exception of shakedown street and built to last.

New question. What's the worst? in your oponion.
I think Shakedown, built to last, followed by Aoxomoxia (i'm going to catch some heat for that)

I can see what you mean about Shakedown, it has some rockin songs though. This is Lowell George's (who is a Bad Ass) interpretation of the boys.I find it fun (although not my favorite) and it makes we want to be a young man again.

Go To Heaven has got some more great classic songs (we are in the next century now so I feel something from that time period can be considered classic).Yet the production definitely is dated and the versions of these great songs are not all that hot....

As for AoxomoxoA being bad... Are you sure you are a Head?

I love AoxoMoxoA, it would be my favorite if it didn't have What's Become Of The Baby other than that it's great.

Aoxomoxoa isn't my favorite studio album either. Don't get me wrong, it has some great songs on it: St Stephen, China Cat, Cosmic Charlie, etc. but they do all of these songs so much better live anyways. Blues for Allah is a little like that too, I usually just wind up listening to One from the Vault as an alternative.

I've gotten the are you sure your a head comment a lot when I mention my AoxomoxoA feelings. Again killer songs but out of the two albums from that period I feel like anthem is far and away better. I still listen to aoxomoxoa from time to time so it's not like I can't stand it at all. Just out of all the great albums the dead put out, it's in my bottom 3 or 4. Not that I really have to justify myself on an subjective topic anyway.

I'd have to say Mars Hotel ... highlights for me are Loose Lucy and Money Money (I don't get why everyone hates that song).

You like it so not everyone hates it. I also like it so that at least makes two of us! (I'm sure there are others!)

Personally I don't understand the concept of truly hating Dead songs. Sometimes live some aren't so hot but to me every song's at least good.

P.S. no one's favorite GD album is In The Dark?

In The Dark is a really fine album, what happened afterwards and who got attracted to it is another matter seperate.

Go To Heaven, Built To Last and Terrapin would be the weakest in my opinion.

As a package overall I think the GD studio albums are underrated and often not treated with the respect they deserve(even by some so called deadheads). The GD as a whole being were not just a live band, they spent some serious time working hard in the studio getting things down and some of the results are brilliant.

Many deadheads are so caught up in listening to shows and that's probably why for a lot of people, the studio albums get forgotten.

If it wasn't for the thousands upon thousands of hours we have to listen to, then the studio stuff would either be listened to a whole whole whole lot more or deadheads would be few and far between 'cause that stuff, while great, would get old real fast.

My favorites are American Beauty, Workingman's, Wake of the Flood, and Mars Hotel. I also like "Money Money". As for least favorites.... probably Built to Last and Go to Heaven. But they still are very good albums.

No one has mentioned the self-titled Grateful Dead LP; was that a studio album?

I remember trundling to high school in an old army jacket with Viola Lee in my step, and hopping for the 11/12 time signature.

I'm a relativist - I tend to love them all as it's all part of the great unfolding adventure, but...American Beauty is a gem!

True in part but so many over the years have just dismissed the studio albums because they think they are not relevant. Which is far from the truth.
