I searched way back to see if anyone had comented on this...
This show from New Years Eve '78 looks good on paper, but it sure gets a mixed review on Amazon! And these people sound like they know what their talking about. How about it people, is this X or not?

Not a bad show by any means but I have never considered it the monster others tout it to be. The video component of the experience helps me enjoy it more than if I only had the audio. That show did not get tons of play by me until they released the DVD.

it had an odd effect on me, the first couple times i listened to it i was like, this is it? but it sort of seeped into my brain intensely powerfully so that when i went back to do the stuff that i was doing while listening to winterland it seemed off. winterland sort of seeped in and now it's one of my favorite dead recordings ever, especially terrapin

As the others said. The video experience DEFINITELY enhances this show. But with that said its still a quality performance. Look for Terrapin, Stagger Lee, and my favorite from it would be Dark Star>TOO>Dark Star>Wharf Rat>St Stephen. All in all worth the money.

I think this is a great show, I love every song on it, they could of mixed up the first set a bit but, I love it.

The intro when Bill comes in on a giant joint thats awsome.

And the blues brothers opened now come on, that would be sweet to see.

While looking for posting on this show I saw someone comment on 10/21/'78, also at Winterland. Man, is the 'Stagger Lee' on the "closing" CD as good as the one I heard on this stream? I am torn between getting 'Hundred Year Hall', 'One from the Vault', or 'Closing of Winterland'. Thank you all for responding so quickly, it's as if we're just rapping right there in the front room.

Hundred years hall would be my pick out of the three. steller playin in the band, lovelight, and the other one. an absolute must.

Hundred Year Hall=Primal Dead. Closing of Winterland=spirited, but smacked out, focused and tight one minute and then sounding stoned and lost the next, which is Typical of '78 moreso than most other years IMO. Flame away.

Man, did anyone else catch the part in Around and Around when Donna lets out this adrenal scream? Like horror movie scream. I had to go back and watch it a few times to see if that actually happened. Oh well, the rest of the song was good. As was the dvd. I wish they showed some of the blues brothers' act though.

But I was just watching the Winterland DVD with my neighbor (who, in the 11 months I've lived in my current place, has caught some serious Dead fever from me), and while I'd give the first 2 sets par for the course, the third set (Dark Star etc...) is SMOKIN'

And at then end, when Bobby's tryin' to say something nice and sentimental about the end of the Winterland, Phil, totally tanked, yells into the mic, "Happy Fuckin' New Year, Everbody!" before staggering off the stage.

You should get it just to have it. They paced themselves that night because it was going to be a long haul. Nothing intense but good playing. Jerry looks so high playing Scarlet and does a real sweet lead in Friend of the Devil. I couldn't get tickets for that night but saw the whole show on PBS and FM stereo broadcast.
