I was wondering if the Grateful Dead hold any sort of world records. I couldn't find any information on this anywhere on-line, and wondered if any of the deadheads here might have any info on it. :-?

I was thinking something along the lines of "Most concerts performed", "most tickets sold" or "longest jam". I dunno something along those lines.

The only think I found was one page stating that they hold the Madison Square Garden record of most concerts played by a group there - 52 sold-out concerts totalling more than 1 million tickets.

Anybody know of any other records held by the group?

Also regarding MSG, I don't believe anyone else has sold out 9 straight shows there like they did in 1991.

Not sure how to check that for everyone. However I did see that Billy Joel sold out 12 shows there in 2006, in what his fan site claims is a "record breaking run". The thing is, these shows span from Jan 23 to Apr 24, over 3 months with other shows in between. Its quite a stretch to call that a run.

The Dead used to have the MSG record. I think Elton John has it now.

Confusion - yeah, Elton John has the individual MSG record with 58 shows there, but the Dead have the record for a group with 52 shows.

I saw that the dead had the record in Boston, as well, until last year, I think when U2 took passed them.

I figure career-wise, though, they must have set some sort of record. I don't know any bands that toured as much as they did (only 2, maybe 3 years off from 65-95). I figure the Rolling Stones are closing in on them fast, but they went around 10 years without a show, if I remember correctly.

Well, as far as longest jam goes, Phish played a :58 minute Runaway Jim in Providence....'97 or '98 I think. I don't think the Dead ever topped that.

maybe not in length but most definately in quality, that jim starts to get old by the end, i can take the half hour bowies and tweezers till my ears bleed but that jim was too long

Don't they hold the record for the largest sound system The Wall Of Sound?

I think they hold the Guiness Book's record for the most days of consecutive LSD consumption.

I saw something once said they had sold more concert tickets than any other band in history .... it sems like a no brainer to me, 30 years, lots of touring ... nobody else is probably close .... The Stones took years off and when they did tour they never had the schedule like the boys and then again the boys never asked for 100 bucks to see them .... I will never pay a 100 face values for a ticket ever that is freakin wrong, so f*ck you Mick !!!!!

woohoo! someone agrees, the rolling stones are charging $100 to see them ruin our memories of them as good musicians. Mick stop wearing belly shirts, keep your wrinkly stomach to yourself
