was there ever a point when these 2 were playing together? for some reason I remember hearing it happened for a short awhile, if so can anyone point out some great shows?

Most times when they "played together" Pig was only on harp and did very little on organ. However, sonically Kieth both respectful to Pig and a good steward to the music. Meaning he didn't step on Pigs toes (or would that be hooves?) but at the same time if more keys were needed he stepped in on up!

They certainly did play together, just check out youtube as a quick point of research and you'll see some 72 stuff with the two them.

One has to feel quite sorry for pig over the last year or so of his life, his health wasn't very good and the band had by and large long moved away from the world it once was - Pigs world. Yet he was a real gentleman all through everything right to the end.

Keith joined in 71 while Pig was sick. They both played together, Pig on the Hammond and Keith on piano.

The first show the Dead played with both Pig and Keith was 12/1/71. It's a strong show. The second set doesn't have much Pig, but the Cryptical jam is massive, and it also has one of the classic '71 versions of NFA>GDTRFB>NFA.

I would have to disagree. Phil is ON that night--and truly out of control during the Cryptical jam. Dick Latavala has sung the praises of this show in interviews and had plans to put it out. He died before he could get to it, I guess.

But opinions about "the best" are just that. Opiniosn vary. Yours is just as valid as mine...

I have Keith's first show and I think it is in November of 1971. Pig was not with the Fall '71 tour until NYE (I think). NYE '71 is a great show.

but you can find it on the internet ,,,

if you can land a copy ...your mouth will drop with aww ...........a very young grateful dead .....they look like little kids having fun .........bobby looks like he's about 16 yrs. old but he's actually in his early 20's.......chow for now
