Hey are there any Widespread Panic fans out there? I'm trying to get into them and I was hoping for some advice. Theres about 30 shows on stash.nugs.net ... Anyone know which are the best performances, setlists, sound quality, etc? Thanks

the sit and ski tour was great, those were my favorite shows.
I am actually quite excited for this saturday's show at Red Rocks. I won a bid on a raffle for two tickets to Red Rocks and a backstage tour of the Venue before the concert. Basically, we get to hang out and see the fabled backstage of Red Rocks (hopefully get a glimpse of Jerry's Autograph) and before the doors open, we get to find a spot. Pretty nice treat!
PS - I am also excited to see Jimmy Herring in the band.

Widespread Panic aka Whitetrash Picnic?
Naw, j/k....they're ok. Only seen them 2x, at both Vegoose festivals. First year blew me away (although I had some help
), but the 2nd year, with Jimmy Herring, no less, was less impressive, IMO. They rarely come 'round Maine, so it's hard to get a good taste of them. I actually wish they would come 'round more often, I'd go check 'em out.

One of the funniest things I have ever seen was Parrish demanding a couple leave the backstage area because they looked too straight. When they refused and started dropping names of some local Denver radio station he had them physically removed.
And along the same lines, in 1984 there was this chick that kept leaning over the rail between the front row and the stage, spreading her legs and flashing the crowd. Security was on her in a flash and started dragging her towards the side entrance of the venue. Bobby came running out and handed her a backstage pass.
I ran into her a couple months later on tour in Indy and Alpine Valley. Based on her actions and the conversations a number of people had with her, we determined she was an informant of some sorts. We figured she had got into a lot of trouble and was being used by the feds to find specific individuals on tour.
Be careful out there!

When I think about it, it's really quite retarted, because you can usually spot these funions a mile away (or shortly after speaking with them). But sometimes they (the feds) get a crafty little butthair who knows what he's doing around the lot & knows how to speak jaberwookie, but I was lucky enough to get briefed by a phriendly stranger before shit hit the fan and I ducked out of that sandwich.

Panic is the shit. especially with Jimmy Herring and their original guitarist, but goddamn Herring is good. I missed seeing them three times, the first due to "who's widespread panic," the second due to circumstances beyond control, and the third, because I shit you not, the tickets for 3 nights of panic in Chicago in early July sold out in like 20 minutes after going on sale. Oh well, hopefully the fall tour......

WSP is pretty good with their origianl guitarist mikey houser, but when they got george mcconnell he kind of fucked it up. He was bad. I know people gave him a bunch of shit for it, which was lame, but he was not a good guitarist. havent heard them with herring on guitar yet, but herring is pretty godly so i have good feelings about that.
Just saw panic at bonnaroo, and wakarusa, both awsome shows. they opened waka with aint life grand, and bonnaroo with disco. jimmy hering is a god

often people say they can't get on it so, I'll post the main part of the thread I think you'll enjoy just in case you aren't able to see the whole thing.
Here's the story behind the Dew,...
Background is that the boys in WSP are all longtime and very good friends of mine. We attended dozens of GD shows together while students at the University of Georgia, and we remain friends today.
I had not seen WSP's performance of the Dew in either the Vegas or the Atlanta. And frankly, I suspected that it was gone, a fleeting throwback to the earliest WSP days, never to be walked out again.
On Friday, before the show I was talking with Dave Schools, and I told him I had some interesting information for him. "The GD never did the Dew at Red Rocks," I said.
"Are you sure about that?" he asked.
"Positive."
At that point Candace walked by and I asked her to confirm. "I have no idea," she said, "but that Morning Dew that you guys did when JB was in the chicken suit (Vegas) was unbelievable."
"Well, that's interesting," Dave said.
On Saturday, Dave gave me a wink and nod as we passed each other backstage.
Before the show on Sunday, my GF and my son Mason and I ran into Dave. He and Mason talked video games for a while, etc, etc. Then Dave turned to me and said, "ready for Sunday Panic?"
"Always."
"Planning to stay to the very end?"
"Like I would leave before that? Y'all have been trying to get me to leave for 24 years."
"It's gonna be worth it."
They knew very well that they had been "chosen" to lay the Dew on the Rocks. And lay it on 'em they did. This Dew was HUGE - reverent and powerful. They nailed what Dave later told me Phil calls "the wedge" - counterpoint in the middle of the song where they work through the D major scale with the guitar ascending and the bass descending.
The beautiful thing is that when I saw Dave after the show, and I thanked him for the incredible experience of being there when a historic wrong was righted, he thanked me for getting the ball rolling.
Once a Prankster always a Prankster.
And that is the true tale of the lone - and in all ways singular - Dew at Red Rocks.
