Time to stick up for Vince.

First off, he entered the Dead when the band itself was way past its peak, and in many ways on its last legs. I think he had a good strong voice and it made a difference on a lot of tunes. He was no Brent of course, but who is?

I recall RFK '93, Stranger opener show. I was out of my mind, actually had gone blind for a few minutes from some heavy dose. Vince played a Long Way To Go Home that night that is still in my mind. He howled, he growled, and he tore it up. Next was a Playin>Terrapin that blew the entire place down, was amazing. I give credit to Vince for getting the band pumped up with Long Way. Listen to Jerry on Way To GO Home, all over it!

Do your worst, guys, but at least you can't blame him for the demise of the Grateful Dead. That's pretty much the fault of Jerry and Brent, in that order. And I liked Samba.
Damn bro, perfect.

IMO, Samba was a great tune. It was more in-line with what the GD used to be than what they presently were. It's sad to hear the Vince bashing. I remember 94 Chicago Soldier's field second set opened with that beautifully ominous intro to Samba and people went fucking nuts. Not just excited; fucking nuts. Not only was it treat but interestingly enough it was the only song that show I didn't know and still enjoyed it as one of the top numbers from that show!

Here's one for ya:

I will not come back to this conversation EVER again ... I am done .... Bruce and Vince should not even be in the same conversation ...yea the band was at it's best I sapose during the Keith years but Keith slept thru 90% of it ....he was good though, when awake,....... Pigpen was a legend, but Vince ... go Samba in the freakin rain till the madness wears off .....

Well that's directly from Vince so no arguing about it being right or wrong. However it was given to me indirectly from somebody who had played with him.

I never really understood why people didnt like vince. I think he really had a lot of creative power and he put it into his music, but they keayboard tones were always cheesy and cheap sounding.

Vince era dead is just as good as any dead to me, in fact one of my favorite shows is 6/6/91
and my favorite scarlet>fire is from seattle 95

They didn't like him cuz he wasn't Brent.
They didn't like Brent cuz he wasn't Kieth.

Etc...

Also they didn't like him cuz he was higher than Jerry often in the mix.

Ya, like that was Vince's fault.

I think people like to use Vince as the scapegoat for some lesser years from the Dead when often the problem was Jerry's addiction...

Yeah...me and some buddies had this similar discussion a few days back. Vince was not master of his own role and representation. Bobby and Jerry too tired to sing\play? How about have Vinny play one...except he only has like two tunes and, as has been mentioned, his sound was totally corralled.

Check out the Estimated from VFTV II...vince comes in with this slick little horn sounding line, Jerry turns around with a genuine 'wow' look on his face, gives him the upward nod and smile and goes back to bopping that filtered wah. Hot.

I just read this somewhere on archive:

"Vince dont deserve any respect in my book.Hes sleeps with little kids or should I say he did sleep with little kids before he died.Yea thats right if you didnt know,he payed parents off to sleep with there kids and thats a fact my man.Thats why the band didnt invite him to the reunion or to where ever they went."

I don't know if this is true or just some jerk talking out of his ass.

either way, it is a filthy way to talk about a dead guy

I'll say this, when I had seen vince live in the bars (post dead) he had an unhealthy obsession with the young ladies. As in delaying a set by 30 minutes to come out of some back room with a lady looking tired.

I would venture to say that whatever you read is a buch of BS plain and simple...They (likely) didn't invite him to the reunion and/or to play in TOO and The Dead because he tried to kill himself on ratdog tour. That is a fact.

I'm sure Vince loved the young girls, but kids??

Maybe you were reading about Mike Gordon.
