In the early 70's that was a standard substitution (maybe it's the John Philips original line for all I know)... it would be interesting to hear it used in the 80's though.

Lines like that are why i love bob wier. another example of a line i could never say with a straight face:

Realy bob? there has to be something else that fits the rhyme scheme. That is just terrible. Oh well i will be the first to adimit. I LOVE THE CHEESE!

John Barlow is responsible for those lyrics, and that line makes a lot of sense to me, one of the weightier lines in the song if you ask me (but nobody did)... I interpret both as euphemisms for a person with lots of potential who is just spinnin his wheels, or being ineffectual.

Sorry tigerstrat for not giving barlow his just due. I love that song but all of my other dead head friends would always give me shit for it. Whenever we'd go ride around and we'd be picking out a show i'd always bust out a sweet saint/sailor from 82 and go ahead and take the heat for it. They always gave me shit for the tiger in a trance line and i guess it's kinda rubbed off (for no reason other than hearing them rag on it soo much). same with "feels a lot like running a red light" line from feels like a stranger. Those songs get me rocking but my "60's and early 70's only" dead head friends (there seems to be a lot of those in my area) would always give me a hard time whenever I put on a little 80's weir. Sorry if I upset you any. Don't take anything I say too seriously, becuase I don't.

What's wrong with that line? I think it's pretty clever...If I'm dropping acid in a stadium full of 20,000 strangers, once it's in the tummy there ain't no point in looking behind you and second guessing, oh should I hit the brakes or should I gun it, no-- let's go.

I think the 'we used to play for acid' phrasing is completed with 'now we play for lines' IIRC. More parallel that way anyhow.

I also remember hearing an Eyes with the flub "Wake up to find out that you are the size of the world". I have a book laying around that has a listing of amusing flubs and deliberate alterations. I'll try to find it.

Yeah, the 'almanack', that's the one. I think it was the first dead-related book I read.

Considering I checked the band out because I liked their t-shirts (and found I looooved the music), it was a real eye-opener to what I'd stumbled into.
