Wow, all you guys listen to some great jazz and blues. I have heard some of what was mentioned. I am totally blown away by John Mayall and Albert King.
I am definatley going to check out some of this. I listen to the Comcast Jazz and blues channels among others and write the names down of stuff I particulary like. (I'd go broke if I went and bought everything I liked) One band that caught my attention one day was called Acoustic Alchamey (I think thats the spedlling) has anyone heard of these guys before?

All great suggestions by these guys here. Jerry Garcia and David Grismans "So What" is a fun album. Certainly doesnt reach the levels of John Coltrane or Miles Davis but its a fun album with some good grooves. And its Jerry so why not?

Definitley check out Mississippi John Hurt. This guy is a fingerpicking genius! It sounds like there's two guitars on the record but hes just amazing at picking the bass and the melody at the same time.

I didn't see Charlie Christian mentioned. He was the first electric jazz player. Listen to his work with Benny Goodman. Amazing.

I too reccomend Taj Mahal, great bluesman/folky. I dont think Buddy Guy's been referenced here yet, he's got some great licks.

If you're not too hung up on the white boy part, try some Hot Tuna/Jorma Kaukonan solo stuff, and google David Jacobs Strain. I saw both of these people at the Philly Folk Fest last summer, they completely blew me away. I am also just getting into the Black Key's, a guitar/drum duo that does garage band/blues, they're pretty good.

As far as Jazz goes, basically everything's been mentioned, but I recently listened to Maynard Ferguson's Chameleon album, that's some fine music.

this is a phenominal session. worth it for 'autumn leaves' alone.

gary burton "like minds"

burton rivals both lionel hampton's and cal tjader's vibrophone prowess. chick corea plays on this album as well as some other notables who slip my mind at the moment...pat metheny perhaps?

speaking of, pat metheny's "the way up" is an instant classic. came out a few years ago.

chick corea's "friends"

amazing musicianship, and the legendary steve gadd on drums! his work here leaves his famous '50 ways to leave your lover' in the dust.

herbie hancock's "empyrian isles" "headhunters" "maiden voyage"

three very different herbie albums, all stellar recordings.

probably my all-time favorite jazz record.
