Robert Johnson, complete recordings is MUST HAVE. He didnt record much so its all on one collection.

Again, great blues recommendations by crazy 9.5. One more note on the kings. I bought this cheap album from Walmart once of Albert King & SRV, I think the album was called "In Session with Albert King". There is some smokin' blues played on this album.

Beyond that, I'd say my 2 favorite blues guitarists are Buddy Guy and Michael Bloomfield. Some recommendations below.

B. Guy - "As Good as it Gets", and "The Real Deal w/ GE Smith and the Saturday Night Live Band" The real deal is a good live album!

B. Guy / Junior Wells - Alone & Acoustic (Buddy on acoustic, and Junior on the harp - a sweet album)

M. Bloomfield - "Don't say I ain't your man" It's a good sampler album of his stuff. Then check out the "Super Session" albums with Al Kooper.

Great call on Super Session with Mike Bloomfield. Funny thing about that album is that he disappeared midway through the sessions and they brought in Stephen Stills for the last few tracks. He is no Mike Bloomfield on the guitar, but he did lay down some nasty funky riffs and great vocals on Season of the Witch.

That first tune on that album, Stop, was a definite mainstay when I started learning guitar. Great call!

9 1/2, yeah their cover of "season of the witch" is real funky. As you mentioned, Stop is smokin, and Albert's Shuffle still ends up on my blues mixes.

Their other recording was also pretty good - The Live Adventures of Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper. They do a nice version of Dear Mr. Fantasy > Hey Jude > Dear Mr. Fantasy, along with a instrumental of The Weight. One of the highlights is "His Holy Modal Majesty" - much better than the Super Session version. It's lead by John Kahn on the bass. It's worth checking out, if you haven't.

Monk & Coltrane- beautiful- Ruby My Dear one of my favs love it gets me everytime
any MMW- these guys are made out to be a jam band but they're jazz in and out, and in true jazz notion put their on twist on it (check out McCarter Theater show on etree)
Chick Corea- now he sings, now he sobs
Lee Morgan-the sidewinder
Coltrane- impressions(my fav), giant steps, the classic quartet
Wes Montgomery-Smokin At The Half Note
Monk, Monk, and more Monk- my fav, not only a french resistence vet but a great jazz pianist with a crazy original style- Live at the It Club

The following is one of the finest jazz guitar albums out there. Important to note there are two sides of George Benson. One is the nasty, young guitarist, the other is still nasty, but more of a smooth jazz guitarist who happens to be an amazing vocalist. That being said, I tend to stay away from the smooth, cheesy stuff.

Live at the Village Vanguard is another smokin recording of the early (1961) John Coltrane Quintet, feat. Reggie Workman -bass, McCoy Tyner -piano, Elvin Jones -drums, and Eric Dolphy -2nd woodwind (mostly bass clarinet)... it doesn't get much deeper and thicker than this!!
