I was just going through Deadbase (a phenomenal resource, especially when listening to shows on the archive) and I noticed that they were different. Me I dont pay too much attention to the Drums/Space . . . just not a huge fan. At first I thought it was era, but there are some "drums" that date all the way to 95 with the last one being 2/26/95.

I think they just spell it "drums" when it's by itself and "Drumz" when it's accompanied by space.Or it's just a personal preference of the author.Just like every knucklehead thinks it's cool to substite "PH" for "F", like in the word Phish.

i like when billy did it solo on occasions in the 70s before mickey came back. I have tremendous respect for the skill it must take to have 2 drummers, but i always like it knowing that the groovey beat was all by one man.

Sometimes I like it, but I really have to be in the mood for it or just so sucked into a show that it just pulls me along like an extension of the songs. I kills me sometimes know I could fit a whole show on 2 disc if I just edit out drumz>space or some lame tune that I'll skip anyway. The completist in me usually wants it all.

i know exactly what you mean, it just doesnt feel complete w/o it, even though you never listen to them. On the other side, there great at show cause everyone leave or goes to the bathroom and you can move up to the front!plus thier better live and on drugs

I think liking Drums/Space or Drumz or "Jam" has a lot to do with whether you like the Dead for the songs or for the weirdness. I'm much more an "in it for the weirdness" kinda guy. I sometimes skip (OK, rarely do I skip anything) past songs to get to Drums and Space.

Hahaha, I'll 4th that. Except in concert, in which case D/S is sweet. Or if I set a show on at night and fall asleep to it, then D/S is cool and helps me fall asleep.

I liked it at shows, mainly for the fact that I could run to the bathroom for a much needed pee break, love those psychotropic-pees that you hold in forever then pretty much see God when you let it out.

Even better is that I never had to say "Hey, what did I miss?" when I came back.

Drums->Space was always wildcard time. Take a leak, get something to nosh on, score a better squat/vantage point, and often to hook up with folks I knew were at the show.

I'd say 1 out of every 3 drums made me take notice as it grooved well.

Space grabbed me at times for the obvious weirdness and occasionally the volume. Seemed to me things got turned up from time to time and nearly scared the shit out of me!

As for listening to shows it kinda depends on what I'm doing and the company I'm in. By myself or with the like minded I'll usually listen to drums. Seldom space. With a mixed group I'll zip over both, often to quell any potential insurrection looking to score a coup de tat on the music selection.

Call it strategic listening.
